A bit of a background on Grainery Care for those that aren't familiar, its a bit long but they do A LOT!
Grainery Care is a Mayfield-based registered charity that provides practical support to people experiencing financial hardship, homelessness, social isolation and other forms of disadvantage across Newcastle and surrounding areas. It has been working in the Hunter for more than 20 years.
Its community work includes:
• Food relief and food rescue — the Food Hub distributes fresh fruit, vegetables and pantry staples, as well as emergency grocery and crisis packs for people experiencing financial stress, homelessness or domestic violence.
• Crisis and welfare support — staff and volunteers help people access other services, including housing assistance, financial support and counselling referrals.
• Free community meals — regular community dinners and breakfasts provide both food and an opportunity for people who may be isolated to connect with others.
• Cafe 252 — a community café with a pay-it-forward program, allowing customers to purchase food or drinks for someone experiencing hardship. Café proceeds also support Grainery Care's charitable programs.
• Supported accommodation — Grainery Care provides supported accommodation for young mothers completing their education.
• Health access — its newer Health Hub is designed to connect vulnerable or disengaged people with GPs, allied health, mental-health, housing and other community services.
• Community connection — its Mayfield facilities provide meeting spaces, support gatherings, craft mornings, community meals and other activities intended to reduce isolation and build social connection.
• An important aspect of Grainery Care is that its assistance is intended to be available without distinction based on age, s*x, race, political views or religious views.
