Meet Gertie.

Gertie is currently in the care of the City of Newcastle Animal Management Facility and is a beautiful, sensitive girl who is learning that the world might not be such a scary place after all.

We don't know what Gertie's life looked like before she came into care, but when she arrived, she was terrified. She would cower in her room and run away from anyone who tried to interact with her.

So the team at the facility gave her something precious. Time, patience and the freedom to learn to trust at her own pace.

And slowly, something beautiful happened.

Gertie has formed bonds with a handful of people she knows and trusts. Now, when they walk into her room, she comes running to greet them, tail wagging, ready for cuddles and play.

For Gertie, this is huge. It's the moment fear begins to make room for trust.

Gertie has also shown some lovely, playful interest in other dogs. Having a confident canine companion could potentially help her continue to build her confidence, although a meet and greet would be essential to ensure they're a good match.

Gertie is looking for an experienced dog owner who understands fearful dogs and will give her the time, patience and gentle guidance she needs to blossom.

Somewhere out there is someone who could change Gertie's world simply by showing her that she's safe.

Sometimes, life throws a curveball, and the last thing anyone should have to worry about while facing surgery and recovery is what will happen to their beloved pet.

Meet Bean, a little guy who joined us through our wonderful referral partners at The Salvation Army's Doorways Community Services.

Bean's dad needed to undergo knee surgery and rehabilitation, but with no one available to care for Bean and no way to afford boarding kennels or a pet sitter, he was facing a difficult situation.

That's where a little bit of teamwork and a whole lot of love come in.

Bean was safely placed in the care of one of our amazing foster carers, who made sure this little man was absolutely spoilt rotten while his dad focused on getting better!

And because every VIP deserves a little TLC, the wonderful team at Cardiff Vets helped Bean get his veterinary care up to date, including his desexing.

This is what prevention looks like. It's about stepping in when life gets tough, supporting people through vulnerable times, and making sure a temporary crisis doesn't mean losing a much loved family member.

A huge thank you to our foster carer, Doorways Community Services and Cardiff Veterinary Hospital for helping us make sure Bean was in very good hands.

And now for the happy ending!

Bean is back home with his dad, and the two are ready to tackle recovery together.

Dad can concentrate on getting back on his feet, while Bean takes charge of the important stuff. Providing cuddles and supervising naps.😉

Meet the handsome Leo

Leo (formally Ares) is a 10 month old Staffy boy, currently in the care of the City of Newcastle Animal Management Facility.

This good looking happy pup unfortunately didn't have the easiest start to life. He sadly spent much of his young life tethered outdoors alongside his sister and missed out on many of the everyday experiences and socialisation that help a dog grow into a confident companion.

But somehow, none of that has dampened his love for people.

Leo is a playful, affectionate and incredibly resilient young boy who genuinely enjoys being around people. He loves a good play, has a cheeky personality and is showing more and more of himself every day.

Leo has also shown that he could potentially live with another dog and a meet and greet with any resident dog will be required, to make sure everyone is a good match.

Leo is still learning the basics of being a dog, so he needs a patient home that can offer structure, guidance and plenty of positive experiences.

After the start he’s had, Leo deserves the chance to discover just how wonderful life can be. And with his beautiful nature and love of people, we think this handsome boy has an incredibly bright future ahead.

Same Mission

We’re proud to call Mayfield Community Cats one of our rescue partners, because when it comes to prevention, we’re absolutely on the same page!

Mayfield Community Cats is a dedicated team of carers, feeders, trappers and volunteers working on the ground to help community cats before the situation becomes a crisis.

Their work includes humanely trapping outdoor community cats so they can be desexed, vaccinated and microchipped, before returning them to their colonies where appropriate. Social cats and kittens are fostered and rehomed into loving homes.

And their prevention work has made a HUGE difference.

The team recently worked alongside RSPCA NSW through the Keeping Cats Safe at Home Program to tackle community cats across Newcastle. They coordinated late night trapping, transport, care and veterinary treatment to get cats the help they needed.

One day saw a record 28 cats desexed in a single day and in just 10 months, around 300 local cats were desexed through the program.

That’s around 300 cats who won’t go on to produce countless more unwanted kittens, helping reduce the pressure on shelters and rescues.

That’s prevention in action. 🙌

But their work doesn’t stop there…

There are currently some gorgeous cats and kittens in their care looking for their happily ever after.

🏉🐾 MEET THE NEWEST KIDS ON THE BLOCK! 🐾🏉

The newest residents at City of Newcastle Animal Management Facility are already getting into the spirit and are absolutely PUMPED for the big game on Sunday when the Newcastle Knights take on the Chickens 🐔

These four legged supporters are ready for game day, and they reckon every good Knights' fan deserves a comfy couch, plenty of pats and someone to cheer alongside. ❤️💙

But here’s the important part…

They’re looking for a forever home and their very own family to watch the game with!

What do you do when your best mate is bleeding… but your bank account is empty?

You live pay cheque to pay cheque.

Your dog slices his face open on a piece of tin.

You can't let him suffer… so you rush him to the vet and hope for the best.

That was Mark and Barney.

After arriving at the vet, Mark discovered he couldn't afford the treatment and wasn't eligible for VetPay. Thankfully, our newest veterinary partner, Hunter Valley Animal Hospital, had just joined the Stay Foundation family and gave us a call.

The answer was easy: "We'll help."

We covered Barney's emergency treatment, Mark contributed what he could towards the bill, and while Barney was already under anaesthetic, the team also desexed him. Saving him another surgery and helping prevent future unwanted litters.

We're so happy to report that Barney is back home recovering well. He may have earned himself a very tough looking scar… but he's also feeling a little lighter after his desexing!

A massive shout out to the incredible team at Hunter Valley Animal Hospital. What a team! Compassionate, skilled and genuinely committed to helping both pets and the people who love them.

September Prevention Project Update

September may have been a little quieter than our last few months, but prevention doesn’t stop and we’re still chipping away at the companion animal crisis, one pet at a time.

This month, our Prevention Project helped:

🐶 27 dogs desexed
🐱 12 cats desexed
💉 68 pets vaccinated
📍 17 pets microchipped
🥣 4,112 pet meals delivered

That’s 39 pets desexed, helping prevent unwanted litters, reduce pressure on pounds and rescue groups, and give families the support they need to keep their pets healthy and at home.

Every number represents a pet.
Every pet represents a family.
Every family supported is prevention in action.

Our Community Pet Care Day at Survivors R Us was everything prevention is about. Local organisations helping the local community, and pets receiving the care they deserve.

A huge thank you to the incredible team at Cardiff Veterinary Hospital/ Cameron Park Vets. Practice Manager Olivia and Dr Andrew Cornwell generously volunteered their time, providing free health checks and vaccinations for both cats and dogs. Together, they managed to see a staggering 46 pets during the event!

We’re also incredibly grateful to Zoetis and MSD Animal health, whose generous donation of free vaccinations and preventative treatments made this possible.

Thank you to the Lake Macquarie City Council Ranger Team for providing free microchipping and NSW Pet Registry updates, helping keep pets safely connected to their families.

A special shout out to SavourLife and the Petstock Feed It Forward Campaign for supplying free SavourLife dog food, ensuring families went home with a little extra support.

Thank you to Good360 Australia for donating pet toys, leads and collars, which were so warmly received by our community.

A big thank you to Survivor's R Us Incorporated for providing the space to host the event and for putting on the absolute best sausage sizzle.
