Catapult has recently received support from the City of Newcastle: Economic Development Sponsorship to build our capacity locally in 2015/2016, the Australia Council for the Arts funding for our professional interdisciplinary creative residency programs in the latter half of 2015, artsNSW for the Flipside Project. Catapult is supported by the NSW Department of Education & Training, the University of Newcastle, Creative Arts Network _ U, Harlequin Floors and Ausdance NSW. Catapult has been invited to be one of Ausdance NSW’s first Associate Companies (2016-2018). This program aims to build the capacity in the dance sector by supporting three companies to assist them to become more sustainable. Our core aims and objectives are:
- To Build a contemporary dance sector in Newcastle, and create a hub for emerging artists, young people and professional practitioners to create and develop as artists in Newcastle.

“My practice is anchored by dance and movement with the intention to communicate ideas and concepts beyond words, transcending everyday language to speak universally.” Kristina Chan ( )

‘Uncoiling Veils of Illusion’
Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub ( )
Video and edit by Samuel James ( )

Nationally Renowned Choreographer Kristina Chan dissolves the boundaries between performer and audience in the immersive projection cube at MAP Mima ( )

Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub has commissioned this new work where movement unfolds across the space, with company professional dancers Jacinta Durney ( ) and Jordan Bretherton ( ) embodying the fluidity, tension, and mystery of the inner self.

The work is not merely observed but experienced. Every gesture, projection, and sonic texture is designed to evoke an intimate kinaesthetic dialogue between audience and performance, revealing the illusions we carry and the raw, untamed truths beneath them. Uncoiling Veils of Illusion invites witnesses to feel, reflect, and encounter the wild and ineffable parts of themselves and the world around them.

Film Maker, Alex Brunton’s ( ) 360-degree multi-channel projections envelop the audience in shifting landscapes that blur the line between the external environment and the landscapes of the mind. While James Hazel’s ( ) hypnotic, undulating soundscape, ebbs and flows alongside the choreography and guides the audience toward states of deep listening, contemplation, and embodied awareness.

CATAPULT Choreographic Hub is proudly supported by Creative Australia ( .australia ) Create NSW ( ) and Lake Mac Arts ( ). Without their support this work wouldn’t be possible. Thank you to everyone who came, watched and supported this incredible work.

Next week, Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub welcomes acclaimed choreographer Kristina Chan to create her new work,
Unveiling Coils of Illusion, for the MAP mima performance space.

Originally developed in 2023 as an intergenerational dance film created with Catapult’s community participants, Unveiling Coils of Illusion now evolves into a full-length live performance that weaves together film and contemporary dance.

Developed specifically for the MAP mima environment, the work brings together moving image and live choreography, expanding the original project into an immersive performance experience. Professional dancers Jordan Bretherton and Jacinta Durney perform alongside the projected film, creating a layered dialogue between past and present bodies, memory and movement.
Presented from March 27–29, this new iteration continues Catapult’s commitment to nurturing choreographic development while connecting professional artists with community-led creative processes.

Uncoiling Veils of Illusion is an immersive immersion into the heart of our wild psyche and our truest relationship with nature, choreographed and directed by Kristina Chan. Through a kaleidoscope of choreography, 360 degree multi-channel film projections by Alex Brunton, and an undulating hypnotic sound design by James Hazel, the work invites the audience into an intimate kinaesthetic experience of deep listening and witnessing.

Catapult performances at the Newcastle Art Gallery Opening
We are super excited to be part of the opening of the Newcastle Art Gallery weekend. What a privilege!!

Friday Night @ 6.15pm & 7.15pm
Sunday @ 2pm

'Touch with Care' is a new work by Catapult Company in response to a new commission by artist Fayen d’Evie.

Fayen’s sculptures '(reflecting air) "Touch enabled her to discern minute details...which often pass unnoticed..."' 2025 were commissioned to enhance safety within the Gallery’s original 1977 brutalist staircases. Crafted from steel and shaped like faceted minerals, the sculptures sit beneath the two staircases in the Gallery’s historic building, offering both functional guidance and sculptural beauty.
