Rise Up and Shine - Tweed Heads South Public School

Maximum respect to these passionate and motivated young jarjums from Tweed Heads South Public School who really stood up to speak their truth on the many social issues that they are bravely confronting. Their resolve to make the world a better, fairer and more inclusive place is infectious and may it inspire us all on a path of overcoming hardships.

The song opens with the lines, “Freedom for all and justice for all”, which sets the tone for the performance that follows. Ths is unapologetic truth naming without falling into blame or finger pointing. These leaders of the future set an incredible example here, that the rest of us could benefit from following. They stand tall and proud, and they don’t shrink away from the challenges. Instead they simply call them out and rise above them.

Together as one, they lean into the ancient wisdom of their culture; they dress in the ochre, grounding themselves in the very dirt and earth of their country, and from that place of belonging comes strength and conviction. With a deep sense of garrima they rise up and shine, singing with pride in who they are and with true passion in their voices.

Janbaleh Jagunnaa Ngalinaa (Walking on our Country) - Goonellabah Primary 2026

The older the stories the more you will learn, so listen closely coz it’s time to return, as these inspired Jarjums from Goonellabah Public School under the guidance of Uncle Gilbert Laurie, go janbalehla ngalinga jagunaa (walking on country) with garrimaa (respect) connecting to gala yirrabal (spirit), because the lessons they teach are timeless wisdom and you don’t want to miss it.

Through Uncle Gilbert they learn language and stories from guriiabuu (a long time ago] and connect deeply with Bundjalung, this place, their country whcih is brought together by four rivers. They learn and they teach.
Hear their voices strong, as they stand together, right on the edge of past and future and sing with their hearts and shake a leg too in celebration of their culture and their country.
It’s infectious.

Nimbunj the Wiiaan - Nimbin is a unique and vibrant community known for its strong sense of identity, creativity, and progressive values. The town’s diversity—ranging from its indigenous roots, its long-established farming families, its academics, artists, and alternative cultural groups— all help shape a community that is both rich in strengths and navigating complex social challenges. It’s the sacred country of the ‘Wiiaan’ - the clever man named ‘Nimbunj’ who would share his stories with jarjums, but not with the adults. He was a little, playful and cheeky man, who the jarjums loved coz he would play tricks on the adults. This is his country -and the Nimbin Rocks are a significant place of initiation, where boys become men, where boys were initiated to responsibility.

The death adder is the most significant totem of the area. With its camouflage, it’s like the trickery of Nimbunj. The death adder's tail is a lure, a trap- for he is the protector of the country. So tread lightly and be respectful! In Uncle Gilbert Laurie’s understanding, the drug culture of Nimbin is like the death adder’s tail. It's a lure, a trick, it's the bait in a trap, and the death adder is “deadly” and ready to strike. It must be respected! ‘Deadly’ to mob is a word that is usually used to describe something good, something awesome, something great for sure, but in the case of the death adder, it’s a tale and a tail with a head attached, with fangs full of venom, a lure, a trap with a deadly bite. In this, we understand and get all the light and all the shadow cast by the light. It’s both deadly and deadly, so watch out.

But the biggest lesson in the story is that these initiations into adulthood, into respect and responsibility, lead to wisdom and to 'bringing family back together. Janabi Nyubani on Widjibal country, and this is the story of Living in Nimbin, the rainbow region, where we must "learn young not to turn your backs to the streets (the death adder) man.”
The celebration here in this amazing song, by these wonderfully wise young Jarjums, is akin to the initiation ceremonies that took place at The Nimbin Rocks.

OneVision Album Release - All Our 2025 Music For Change Songs!

This album brings together all the tracks we've produced this year, incl. two cracking songs from our workshops in Casino NSW and Nerang QLD, plus five original public school songs created by young people across Bundjalung Country through One Vision Productions’ Music for Change program. Each of these public school tracks is grounded in it’s deep connection to Country, culture, language, and story, carrying the voices of Jarjums who sing with pride, honesty, and hope.
With their passion flowing through them from the rivers to the sea, from the bush and into town, from past and into future, these songs celebrate resilience, belonging, and the wisdom passed down through Elders and ancestors. Together, they form a powerful collective statement from the next generation: proud of who they are, respectful of where they come from, and ready to walk forward together; strong, connected, and united.
Huge Respect to our Elders involved this year , Uncle Gilbert Laurie and Aunty Joan Sherriff who’s wisdom, knowledge, strength and grace continue to guide our Jarjums, our One Vision team and the broader community as a whole.
