Fletcher Street Cottage

Fletcher Street Cottage Support, information, referrals, basic needs and advocacy for locals in need: Byron Community Centre.

Responding to the growing need for services supporting the local homeless, Byron Community Centre + Creative Capital (the team behind Habitat) have joined forces to reopen Fletcher Street Cottage, located in the middle of town. Previously run as a drop-in centre for the homeless, Fletcher Street Cottage has been closed for five years, due to a lack of funding. Owned by council, they recently voted

to reopen the cottage as a hub for Byron's most vulnerable with co-located services making for easy access.

“Fletcher Street Cottage has achieved so many positive, needed and deserved outcomes to many who have walked through our doors. But essentially we have all achieved this, we have not done this alone. Thanks to the wider community who donate their time, their money and their love to allow us to keep our doors open. Thanks to our many volunteers who bring their magic to the cottage too and make what we do possible.” - Damian Farrell, Fletcher Street Cottage Manager

Real change starts by listening. Representatives from the Justice and Equity Centre's Homeless Persons' Legal Service visited Fletcher Street Cottage alongside StreetCare to speak with service users about their experiences navigating the legal system.

"By listening to people with lived experience of housing insecurity, these conversations help shape stronger housing and homelessness policy, improve access to justice and ensure the voices of our community are heard where they matter most." - Damian Farrell, Manager

Thank you to the Justice and Equity Centre and StreetCare for taking the time to connect with our community and champion meaningful change.

It was great to sit down with Mandy Nolan, Greens candidate for Ballina, for a meaningful conversation about how she can help us work with the government to address the homelessness crisis in our region.

So we can continue offering essential services and dignity to our most vulnerable through our community support hub, Fletcher Street Cottage.
