The Global Energy Network Institute (GENI) Foundation was created 6 March 1990 and we became a Trust on 27 November 1997. Our aim is to provide truthful, accurate, independent information and articles to the general public. We are an NGO, non-profit and volunteer organisation conducting

research and education focused on compelling and technologically feasible global energy strategy that addresses the fundamental issues of quality of life. We focus on electricity and its sources. Electricity is the essential infrastructure that enables our modern quality of life. Renewable energy sources offer a transition from polluting fossil fuels to a clean environment and sustainable energy. The GENI Foundation focuses on the interconnection of electric power networks between communities, nations and continents, with an emphasis on tapping abundant renewable energy resources to provide clean energy to people of all nations. This strategy is the highest priority of the World Game simulation developed by Buckminster Fuller. Linking renewable energy between all nations mollifies conflicts, grows economies, and increases the quality of life and health for all. A Colorado farmer has placed 3,276 solar panels over five acres of farmland, allowing crops to grow beneath them while producing clean electricity. The project shows how one piece of land can generate both food and power.
Known as agrivoltaics, the system uses elevated solar panels to provide partial shade for crops. The cooler conditions can reduce water evaporation and help some heat-sensitive plants during hot weather.
The solar installation also provides the farm with an additional source of income while keeping the land in agricultural use. Jack’s Solar Garden has become a research site for studying how crops, livestock and solar energy can coexist.
Agrivoltaics does not improve every crop in every climate, and results depend on crop type, panel spacing and local conditions. But when properly designed, the same farmland can produce crops and electricity instead of forcing farmers to choose between the two.

German is upgrading old wind turbines with fewer but much bigger machines.
Instead of building from scratch, they are replacing small, aging turbines with modern ones at the same sites. This saves roads, grid connections, and locations already proven good for wind. But bigger turbines still need new permits and environmental checks.
Old turbines from 20 years ago made only 0.6 MW, while today's machines can reach 4-7 MW each. That means one new turbine can produce several times more power, through the exact output depends on height, rotor size, wind, and site rules.
By the end of 2025, Germany had 68.1 GW of onshore wind, adding about 4.5 GW that year, while retiring 0.6 MW of old capacity. The country wants 115 GW by 2030, which means adding nearly 9.4 GW every year.
Repowering is key, but not the only path. In 2025, Germany approved 20.8 GW of new projects, showing that fresh sites are also being built. At the same time, battery storage is growing - about 24 GWh installed by 2025 - helping balance wind and solar power.
The big idea: Germany is mixing repowering + new projects + storage to expand clean energy faster and smarter.

Spain's Tarifa wind turbines in Cadiz Province have been generating clean energy since 1992, proving that well-maintained renewable energy infrastructure can remain productive far beyond its original design life. The 12 original 225-kilowatt Vestas turbines are now more than 32 years old and continue operating successfully.
Each turbine has accumilated more than 280,000 operating hours-around 3.5 times their original 80,000-hour design life. Although engineers have repeatedly predicted the turbines would soon need to be retired, the wind farm has continued operating reliably for decades.
In an unexpected milestone, 2023 became the most productive year in the wind farm's entire history. Favorable wind conditions across the Strait of Gibraltar helped the again turbines generate their highest annual electricity output since they were installed, outperforming their own long-term average despite their age.
Because the turbines were fully paid off years ago, they are now generate near zero-cost electricity. With no remaining capital debt, the main expenses are routine maintenance and replacement of worn components, making the cost of electricity significant;y lower than that of newly financed power projects.
The wind farm's operator has continued using the original turbines because replacing equipment that still operates efficiently with new debt-financed turbines may not improve profitability. The Tarifa project demonstrates that well-maintained wind turbines can continue producing reliable, low cost clean electricity for decades after their expected service life, extending the value of renewable energy investments.

New Zealand just announced it will reach 100% renewable electricity by 2030 — ten years ahead of its previous target — after rooftop solar installations grew by 400% in three years and pushed midday grid prices to zero on sunny days.
New Zealand already generates approximately 85% of its electricity from renewables — primarily hydropower, geothermal, and wind — making it one of the cleanest grids in the developed world. The final 15% has historically come from gas peaking plants that cover dry-year hydro shortfalls and evening demand peaks. The explosion in rooftop solar is now eliminating the economic case for those peakers more rapidly than any policy measure could have achieved.
The solar growth dynamic in New Zealand follows a pattern now familiar from Australia and Germany. As panel costs fell below the cost of grid electricity, household adoption accelerated exponentially. Each new rooftop installation reduces midday grid demand, which reduces midday electricity prices, which increases the financial attractiveness of adding more storage to solar systems, which further reduces evening peaking requirements. The self-reinforcing cycle is compressing decades of projected transition into years of actual deployment.
Meridian Energy — New Zealand's largest renewable generator — has announced that its North Island wind farms are now regularly operating at full output simultaneously with the new solar surge, driving wholesale prices to zero or below during daylight hours. The company is redirecting capital from gas peaker maintenance to battery storage procurement, recognizing that the storage technology now competes economically with gas on peak-hour reliability.
New Zealand's grid was already one of the world's cleanest. The solar revolution is finishing the job.

'Last summer, Australia's electricity grid underwent a quiet but consequential shift. Across the east coast, gas-fired power stations - long viewed as the only way to keep the grid functioning on our hottest or coldest days - barely ran.
The amount of energy generated by fossil gas this year dropped to its lowest point in 25 years. Batteries are now filling this gap, as a cheaper, cleaner alternative at peak times.
And wholesale electricity prices are 47% lower than this time last year, thanks to record renewable and battery generation.
