Installing knee braces onto a 40-metre structural steel column using a 135-foot boom lift.

First, we loaded the braces, bolts and tools into the boom basket. Then we travelled up the column, installed the first brace and used a time-lapse to show the rest of the installation.

The view is goodโ€”but there is not much room for error at this height.

These wall-plate holes didnโ€™t line up properly with the ferrules, so the bolts couldnโ€™t be installed.

First I marked exactly where material needed to be removed, then used a die grinder to carefully widen the two holes.

Once the holes lined up, the bolts went through and the connection could be tightened off.

A small alignment issue, but enough to stop the connection completely.

How would you have fixed this one?

Always follow the approved drawings, engineering requirements and site procedures before modifying structural steel or connection holes.

I was asked to test a DTI washer VS turn of nut using a hydraulic torque wrench... so I finally did.

For this test, I rotated the nut to **150ยฐ** and then checked the DTI washer using a feeler gauge.

I genuinely wasn't expecting the result. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

This is simply the outcome from **this particular test and setup**โ€”it's not intended to replace your project's bolting procedure or specifications. Always follow the approved installation and inspection requirements for your job.

This roof purlin was ready to be installed, but there was one problem โ€” the cleat it needed to bolt to was missing.
I prepped the steel, marked the correct location, positioned the cleat and welded it into place.
After cleaning up the weld, it was time for the real test โ€” dropping the purlin back into position and seeing whether the bolt lined up.
Straight through. โœ…

This cleat was on the wrong side of the beam, so it needed three new holes to match the cleat on the opposite side.

The first two holes were drilled using a Milwaukee battery-powered mag drill, but the centre hole was impossible to reach, so the oxy torch came out to finish the job.

Sometimes you've just got to use the right tool for the situation.

This steel column was sitting approximately 300mm too high because the footing cut-out wasnโ€™t there, which was also pushing the connected main beam out of level.

We brought the telehandler in to support and lift the beam, measured and marked the amount that needed to be removed, then cut the first section out with the base plate.

After removing the remaining material to get the full 300mm correction, I prepped the steel, welded the base plate back on, coated the repaired area and lowered everything back into position.

The final level check shows the difference.

Can you guess what I'm installing before the reveal? ๐Ÿ‘€

This connection starts with drilling a hole through the roof purlin, then installing a threaded hook through the roof angle bracing before tightening everything into place.

It might not look like much, but this small connection plays an important role in the roof bracing system.

This SHS connection was approximately 145mm out from its original position, so it wasn't lining up where it needed to connect.

I installed a come-along to lift one side of the SHS, cut the existing cleat off, then ground and prepped the steel ready for the new connection.

A new cleat was positioned and welded to suit the corrected location. Once everything was ready, we lowered the SHS back into place, installed the bolts and tightened the connection.

Just to clarify: the 55mm marked on the steel in the video was only a reference measurement โ€” it was not the total adjustment. The SHS moved approximately 145mm from its original position.
