If you’re working today’s public holiday (Monday 8 June), ensure you receive the correct penalty rates.

🟥 Full-time and part-time public sector employees required to work on a weekday public holiday will receive double time for time worked (multiply your hourly rate x2).
🟧 Casual public sector employees are usually entitled to double the casual rate (125% + 125% = 250% - multiply x2.5).

If you work in the private or aged care sectors, check your current EBA via the member portal as entitlements will vary.

🏳️‍🌈It’s 1 June, which means its Pride Month in many countries, including Australia.

Pride Month has been celebrated in Australia since the 1970s. The first Sydney Mardi Gras occurred on 24 June 1978, as an anti-LGBTQIA+ discrimination protest which ended with police arrests and violence against protestors.

Even in 2026 many people in the LGBTQIA+ community continue to face discrimination, stigma, and barriers to safety, including within healthcare settings and workplaces.

Many nurses, midwives and carers also experience bias, assumptions, or concerns about being open at work. A genuinely inclusive workplace is essential for staff wellbeing and for delivering safe, high-quality care. As a union, we have a role in supporting our members to feel safe, respected, and empowered at work.

Here’s some LGBTQIA+ resources for nurses, midwives and carers

'For much of mainstream Australia, the return of diphtheria has come as a surprise. But for those of us working in Aboriginal health, this outbreak is not isolated.

When we talk about Closing the Gap, this is the gap.'

We have a LOT of work to do.

⛽Many ANMF members rely on their personal vehicles to deliver essential care in homes, communities and health services across Victoria. With the fuel crisis we know the current allowance no longer reflects the real cost of their work-related travel. ANMF Federal and Vic Branch are lobbying on behalf of members to reduce the financial impact of rising fuel costs.

*EDIT TO ADD* If you drive your car for work and use the ‘cents per kilometre’ method to claim a tax rebate for each work-related km travelled, from 1 July you can begin claiming 91c per km. Note: this rate is for the 26/27 financial year; your 25/26 tax returns will still need to claim the old rate of 88c.

National Reconciliation Week begins today. It's a time for all Australians to learn about and celebrate our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The 2026 theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit to reconciliation, to acknowledge that reconciliation is not a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people.

ANMF (Vic Branch) is all in for reconciliation, and all in for Treaty. Read more https://otr.anmfvic.asn.au/articles/all-in-for-reconciliation-national-reconciliation-week-2026/

Today is National Sorry Day, the 29th anniversary since the truth-telling 'Bringing The Home Report' was tabled in Australian Parliament.

The Bringing Them Home inquiry is an important truth-telling document shared with the nation about Australia’s Stolen Generations.

We remember the forced removal of First Nations children from their families, culture, and Country and recognise the resilience and strength of the Stolen Generations. We acknowledge and reflect on the continued intergenerational trauma this has and continues to have on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, especially their health outcomes.

Many of the report’s 54 recommendations remain unfulfilled or only partially implemented, which is why the Healing Foundation are urgently calling for 'from Sorry to Action'. Please give them a follow and check out their website.

Vale Neale Daniher.

ANMF (Vic Branch) sends our condolences to the Daniher family.

After a diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND), Neale helped reshape the landscape of this disease in Australia. He fought back, not with medicine but with purpose by launching Fight MND with Patrick Cunningham and Dr Ian Davis OAM – a national campaign that has since raised over $115m for research, advocacy and care.

Last year Neale's daughter Bec Daniher spoke at our annual Delegates Conference about the Daniher family's mission: to Fight MND.

‘[Dad] decided that regardless of what was told to him, he had an ability to fight back … he took that opportunity, [and] if someone with a terminal illness can find an opportunity, I thought: I can do that as well.'
