We continue to try to destroy it, but the human (not just for the native inhabitants) benefits of conserving natural habitats is huge. Healthy ecosystems directly support human health, food security, economic stability, climate resilience, and wellbeing.

The world’s ecosystems provide services valued at an estimated US$125–140 trillion per year, including clean water, pollination, soil formation, flood mitigation, and climate regulation. When habitats are destroyed, these services become expensive or impossible to replace.

Approximately 75% of global food crops rely at least partly on animal pollination. Habitat loss is considered one of the greatest threats to pollinators worldwide.

Native ecosystems protect water supplies

* Forests and wetlands naturally filter pollutants and sediments from water.
* More than one-third of the world’s largest cities obtain a significant portion of their drinking water from protected forested catchments.
* Restoring wetlands can reduce water treatment costs by millions of dollars annually.

Forests absorb roughly 7.6 billion tonnes of CO₂ annually, helping slow climate change.

Coastal habitats such as mangroves can reduce wave heights by up to 66%, protecting communities from storms and flooding.

Studies have found that people who spend at least 120 minutes per week in nature report significantly better physical and mental health.

Benefits include:

* Lower stress levels
* Reduced anxiety and depression
* Improved cardiovascular health
* Better sleep quality

Australia has already lost or degraded more than 50% of many native ecosystems since European settlement. Habitat loss remains the leading threat to most threatened Australian species.

Healthy native habitats provide Australians with:

* Cleaner water
* Pollination for crops
* Protection from floods and erosion
* Carbon storage
* Recreational and tourism opportunities
* Improved physical and mental health

We do not conserve native habitats only for wildlife. We conserve them because human survival, health, food security, clean water, economic prosperity, and climate resilience all depend on functioning natural ecosystems.

🦘 HELP US SAVE MORE KANGAROOS 🦘

Since January 2026, East Coast Exotic Haven has responded to an incredible 98 macropod rescues across our region.

Every rescue is a race against time. Our trauma carers are often called to injured kangaroos involved in vehicle strikes, fencing entanglements, dog attacks, and other emergencies. Having the right equipment can mean the difference between life and death.

Today, we are seeking community support to purchase three professional Kangaroo Rescue Bags, essential emergency response equipment used for the safe rescue and transport of injured wildlife.

These specialist rescue bags are:

✅ Designed, tested and made in Australia
✅ Manufactured from premium-grade PVC coated mesh
✅ Fitted with a heavy-duty “D” shaped zip for easier loading and unloading of injured animals
✅ Constructed with reinforced webbing handles for strength and safety during transport

Each bag costs $380, meaning we need to raise $1,140 to equip our trauma carers with this vital rescue gear. Anything over this will go into providing additional emergency rescue gear, milk and equipment.

As a registered Australian charity with DGR status, every donation directly supports wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in our community.

Have you ever wanted to make a real difference for native wildlife?

East Coast Exotic Haven is excited to offer our Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Induction and Bird Rehabilitation Course.

📍 Maryborough (location advised upon successful application)

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to begin their journey in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, with a special focus on the rescue, care, assessment and rehabilitation of native birds.

💚 Non-Members – $50 Family

HUGE call out to Active Tree Fellas, for the donation of time and equipment.
