𝐅𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐢𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝.

Feral pigs are one of the most damaging introduced animals in our landscape, and native bushland pays a big price.

As they forage, pigs plough up the ground looking for roots, bulbs, fungi and invertebrates. In a single night they can turn over large patches of soil, destroying native understorey, orchids and seedlings that may have taken years to establish.

The damage doesn't stop there:

- Disturbed ground opens the door to w**ds, which outcompete native plants
- Pigs carry Phytophthora dieback on their feet and bodies, spreading a disease that kills banksias, grass trees and jarrah
- They eat frogs, reptiles, ground-nesting birds' eggs and small animals, and compete with native wildlife for food
- Wallowing in creeks and wetlands tramples riverbanks and muddies water that native species depend on

Farmers feel it too. Pigs root up pasture and crops, damage fences and water points, prey on newborn lambs and can carry diseases that affect livestock.

Feral pigs are listed as a key threatening process to Australia's native species, and because a sow can have up to two litters a year, populations grow quickly if left unchecked.

This winter we completed another round of control within an area in the upper catchment, working with an accredited contractor and local landholders. Over 120 pigs were removed, along with dozens of unborn piglets, preventing the next generation from reaching the bush. This builds on six consecutive years of coordinated control in the area.

A huge thanks to the group's field operators for their skill and commitment, and to the landholders who give access and support the program year after year. 🙌

Pigs don't stop at fence lines, so working together across properties is what makes the difference.

Join the Great Aussie Bird Count! All you need to do is spend 20 minutes counting the birds you see, then submit your sightings. It’s a simple way to help us learn more about Australia’s birdlife with every count helping to build an understanding of Australia’s birdlife and how it’s changing.

The definition of a “small landholder” is not set in stone, but is generally conferred to be 1 – 100 hectares (2.5 to 250 acres) of land. Nonetheless if you consider yourself a small landholder we’d love to hear from you.

Accessing the advice and resources you need as a small landholder in Western Australia can be challenging, so we're exploring what services & models could change that. 🌱 Roots down at Grassdale

Revegetation works are complete at Grassdale near Wandering, and around 5,800 native seedlings are now in the ground ready to grow.

What's been delivered:

- Approx. 2.8 ha of site preparation and planting
- 0.6 km of fencing to manage livestock access
- 2.5 ha of w**d control, including 1 ha of spiny rush (Juncus acutus)

Why it matters:

- Native vegetation provides shade and shelter for stock and helps protect soils.
- New plantings create habitat for native birds, insects and other wildlife.
- Fencing keeps stock out while seedlings establish, giving them the best chance to survive and protect them for the long term.

It's been a real team effort, with community groups and the local primary school coming together to help the landholders get the job done. Rainfall has been limited this season, so we're hoping the seedlings get enough moisture over the coming months to settle in and establish.

A big thanks to the landholders and everyone who got their hands dirty.

𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 - 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗹’𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆!

Over four years, 5 Rivers NRM and local landholders delivered 16 projects across 15 properties, installing 30.1 km of stock-exclusion fencing and restoring 13.25 ha of riparian vegetation.

By keeping livestock waste and nutrient-rich runoff out of waterways, these works help stabilise streambanks, improve habitat and protect Bindjareb Djilba (Peel-Harvey estuary). A healthy estuary supports the Peel region’s tourism, recreation, agriculture and local jobs - making restoration an investment in our environment and economy.

🌾 Spiny rush: a prickly problem in our upper catchment

Spiny rush (Juncus acutus) is one of the biggest w**d challenges along creeklines and wet areas in the upper Peel-Harvey catchment, and once it takes hold it's hard to shift.

It forms dense, tussocky clumps of stiff stems with needle-sharp tips, and it spreads fast along waterways where its seed is carried downstream with every flow.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞:
- It crowds out native sedges and rushes, turning diverse creeklines into a single-species thicket.
- Dense stands offer little food or shelter for native birds, frogs and insects.
- It chokes waterways and wet areas, changing how water moves through the landscape.
- Stock won't eat it, and the sharp tips can injure animals and people, making paddocks and water points hard to access.
- Each plant produces huge amounts of seed that can stay viable in the soil for years.

That seedbank is why one round of control is never enough. Follow-up treatment is what stops spiny rush from simply growing back.

Spiny rush control has been a common thread across our on-ground works this year, with treatments carried out at several sites to prepare for revegetation and protect creeklines. The main focus was Stage 2 of targeted control along Wandering Brook, where 3.5 ha was treated, building on the initial control work done at the site previously. Keeping on top of regrowth now gives native vegetation the chance to re-establish and protects the creekline downstream.
