What a wonderful morning exploring some of the river rehabilitation work happening across the Hotham-Williams catchment!

Last Saturday, we had the pleasure of taking members of the community out on our Hotham-Williams Rivers Bus Tour to showcase the river rehabilitation works weโ€™ve been undertaking since 2022.

Our morning took us to three of our rehabilitation sites; Ranford Pool-Darminning, Pumphreys Bridge-Koompkinning and Williams, giving our guests the opportunity to see the work firsthand and hear about what weโ€™ve achieved so far.

We talked about w**d control, revegetation, natural regeneration, bank rehabilitation and the ongoing work needed to restore and protect these important waterways.

The day also included some wonderful cultural Welcomes, with Elder Debbie Thorne sharing knowledge with us at Darminning, and Elders Jock & Nick Abraham Welcoming us at Pumphreys Bridge with a Smoking Ceremony and a beautiful rendition of Grandfather Johnson by Slim Dusty.

We were also very spoilt with a delicious morning tea provided by the Pumphreys Bridge CWA ladies!

It was a great opportunity to get out On Country; showcase the work weโ€™ve been doing and share our plans for the future.

This is just a taste of what has been achieved so far - with eight rehabilitation sites planned across the project, there is plenty more work ahead!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their knowledge, helped along the way and made the day so special.

๐Ÿ“ธ Here are a few highlights from a great day on the rivers!

๐ŸŒฑ Knowing you want to improve biodiversity is one thing.

๐Ÿค” Knowing where to begin and what will make the greatest difference, is another.

During this workshop weโ€™ll learn how to look at remnant bush and waterways and assess their condition, understand why healthy remnant bush, shelterbelts and waterways matter (not just for biodiversity but for the farm itself), and identify common w**ds and threats encroaching on our bushland.

Property Planning for Biodiversity Benefits is a practical session hosted by Cass Jury, Program Manager from Nature Conservation Margaret River Region (NCMRR). The day is designed to help you step back, look at your property as a whole and decide where your time, effort and resources can have the greatest impact.

Lunch and morning tea is included in the ticket price.

An Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) catches a fish, takes it back to the nest, eats its fill - then drops the leftovers.

Those bones and scraps don't go to waste. They become food for insects and other small creatures. Then an Australasian Swamphen (Porphyrio melanotus) comes along, picks up a fish bone, shakes it to dislodge the bugs, and eats them.

It's a small, fascinating glimpse of the food web at work, and a reminder that an estuary isn't a collection of separate species. It's a connected system, where energy and nutrients are constantly moving between water, land, plants, and animals.

The same principle operates on a much larger scale.

Our ARC Linkage Project found that a drying climate, nutrient loads from the catchment, and the way we manage that catchment will all have major consequences for the future health of the Peel-Harvey Estuary.

The interaction between an osprey, a fish bone, insects, and a swamphen is a small, visible example of something much bigger: everything is connected.

What happens upstream can affect the estuary. What happens in the estuary affects the animals that depend on it. And the health of the whole system depends on thousands of connections between water, land, and living things.

The future of the Peel-Harvey isn't just about water quality, nutrients, or climate projections.

It's about keeping the food web and the living system it represents - healthy, resilient, and connected.

With plenty of rain about, anything spread on our gardens has a good chance of ending up somewhere it shouldnโ€™t - including our drains, waterways and eventually the ocean.

So give the fertiliser a rest and wait until spring before feeding the garden. Your plants will survive, and our waterways and Blue Swimmer Crabs will thank you for it!

After all, crabs prefer their garlic butter without a side of fertiliser. ๐Ÿ˜…

Building better farms for a healthier estuary!

Last month we hosted an Integrated Nutrient Management workshop in Mandurah with agronomist David Hardwick. The hands-on session explored how nitrogen, potassium and Sulphur cycle through farming systems, and why soil biology is the foundation of it all.

Participants left with a deeper understanding of how nutrient management on-farm connects directly to the health of the Peel-Harvey Estuary, because what happens on the land doesn't stay on the land!

A big thank you to David Hardwick for sharing his expertise and to our participants for their enthusiasm and great questions on the day.
