💜 Dementia doesn’t only happen later in life.

This moving SBS Insight story that aired earlier this week shares Lisa’s journey after being diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease at just 47, and the challenges her family faced navigating care and support.

Around 29,000 Australians are living with younger-onset dementia, highlighting the importance of awareness, understanding, and timely support.

KCLC are founding member of the Dementia Voices Alliance and the Don’t Demention It Support Group. The group meets at KCLC on the last Thursday of every month at 1pm and also catches up socially in between meetings.

It’s a powerful group of people who have become great friends through shared experiences, support, and understanding.

If you or someone you care about is living with dementia and would like to connect with others who understand, we’d love to welcome you to our group.

Younger-onset dementia patients (those under the age of 65) can access NDIS funding to support their care for the rest of their lives. But it can take months for families to receive assessments or care.

"I would be doing about 15 hours administrative work a week," Luke told Insight.

"But it was the begging and pleading I had to go to."

Food insecurity is growing in Australia.

Without the work of Foodbank Victoria KCLC wouldn’t be able to support as many people as we do.
It is important we make it ok for people to reach out, to ask for what they need to thrive.

Demand for material aid supports is growing across our state, including Kyabram. Any support you are able to give is greatly appreciated.

These could include;
* food donations
* coats/jackets/jumpers
* blankets and sleeping bags
* beanies/scarves and gloves
* vouchers/cash donations to enable us to buy what people need

Today we were delighted to welcome Dave McNamara, CEO, and Jac Fletcher, Chief Fundraising & Marketing Officer from Foodbank Victoria to KCLC.

It was a wonderful opportunity to share more about the work we do, the people we support, and the impact that strong partnerships have within our community. Foodbank Victoria is one of our valued partners, helping us provide food relief to individuals and families who may be experiencing hardship and need a little extra support.

No one should have to go hungry unnecessarily. While access to food is often the immediate need, we know that behind every food parcel is a person, a family, or a set of circumstances that may require additional support. At KCLC, we are committed to providing wrap-around support for our community, connecting people with services, resources, and opportunities that help them navigate challenges and build stronger futures.

We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with Foodbank Victoria and the vital role they play in helping us meet the needs of our community.

On the opening day of the registrations rebate we saw over 30 people attend our Neighbourhood house looking for support to access the rebate.

We had to turn them away.

We attempted to find alternative supports to access the app. We recommended Shire service centre, however they also had only one staff member available, so they were not able to support them.

The most vulnerable are not able to access funds that are designed to help them pay for fuel, food or medical bills, pay rent, but instead they are either going without or desperately trying to find assistance.

Our communities do not need help that is dangled just out of reach. They need real support for our communities.

We encourage community to let local MP know the rollout of this program is not adequate for our communities.

We have heard from Peter Walsh’s office that community members are able to reach out for assistance to make a claim. Call Peter’s office on 54822039 for support to access the rebate.


Neighbourhood Houses Victoria RANCH - Regional Association of Neighbourhood and Community Houses Jacinta Allan Peter Walsh for Murray Plains

Neighbourhood Houses Victoria proposed a partnership for the Registration Rebate, which would have funded our work in helping community access the rebate.

They rejected the proposal, and told us there was no funding available to assist community members who face challenges with digital literacy, digital access, language barriers and more. They are expected to apply via the website or app, or miss out on the rebate.

We think that is incredibly unfair and a poor effort from the State Government, with horrible outcomes for both our most vulnerable community members and our already underfunded Neighbourhood Houses.

Please let your local MP, Ingrid Stitt MP and Luba Grigorovitch MP know that our community deserves better!

KCLC’s Kyabram’s CDS team are very excited to see container diversion baskets will be installed across the Shire.

Make sure you use the bins and cash in your containers at Kyabram CDS at 117 Albion St Kyabram. (The Kyabram Shed).

📣Exciting news! With support from CDS Vic and help from the VIVID work crew, we’re installing 100 container diversion baskets on street litter bins across the shire to make recycling easier and help keep our public spaces looking their best. ✨✨
❓How do they work ❓
👉 Drop your empty, eligible drink containers into the baskets.
♻️ This keeps valuable recyclables out of landfill and supports locals who collect containers for the 10c refund.
👨‍👨‍👧‍👦Anyone can leave containers or collect them for a refund at any time.
