Kyabram Urban Landcare Group This page has been set up to showcase the flora and fauna as well as the ongoing work by the Kyabram Urban Landcare Group at the reserves that we manage.

The Grey Box Reserve is a 4.75 ha. remnant of the original Box Ironbark bushland pre white settlement and is entered from the Par 3 Golf Club carpark. The Ern Miles Reserve covers 28 ha. and is situated on South Boundary Rd. 300 m east of Lake Rd. and was originally degraded farmland acquired by the Council for town flood management. In 2003 Kyabram Landcare was given the task of revegetating the

site. During this time some 15,000 trees and shrubs have been planted and over 100 species of birds have been recorded, most of which have returned since revegetation began. This is what we have achieved so far...

KULG – Chairpersons Annual Report to July 2026
KULG meet bi-monthly on the 1st Thursday of the month. KULG continues to be responsible for managing the Ern Miles Reserve (ERM), Grey Box Reserve (GBR) and Don Anderson (Trotting Track) Reserves in accordance with our mission statement.
Following the Annual General Meeting, held in March 2025 saw the following office bearers duly elected:

Vice Chairperson - Brian Freemantle
Secretary - Neville Hunter
Treasurer - Robyn Keath

A BIG THANK YOU to Neville, Brian and Robin for all the work they do as the executive committee for KULG.
To the members of KULG, a HUGE THANK YOU for watering plants, at home and in the reserves, for the w**ding, grass mowing, w**d spraying, litter collection and the general duties associated with keeping our spaces safe for the public and biodiverse for all creatures great and small. Thank you to those who have
been part of the working bees and planting days, who attended events and helped in community education, well done everyone.
Successes:
 Hosted Wattle Day in August 2025 at EMR – wattle walk with @ 20 people attending
 Attended the GMLN 30 year celebration at the Masonic Lodge Kyabram
 Celebrated the end of the year 2025 with a BBQ tea and dessert – thanks to Andrew and Dianne
 Installed a foot bridge over the concrete drain at the north east corner of the GBR – thanks to Brian F
 Installed some seating at the GBR – thanks to Brian
 Installed a pedestrian gate at the EMR aligning with the levee bank and crossing from walking track
 Replaced some sun damaged signs in the GBR
 Wrote a submission to Campaspe Shire Council in April to re-classify the land use of the Ern Miles Reserve from maintenance to public open space – no response from Council
 Successful in obtaining a $1000 grant from the Kyabram Club for the 150 years celebration and Wattle Day
 Planted 20 gum trees at the Ern Miles Reserve to fill gaps in the shrub sites in April
 Planted @150 trees, shrubs and grasses along South Boundary Road in April, along with community members
 Spread 3 truckloads of mulch from Jones Brothers, prior to the South Boundary Road tree planting day
 Watered and w**ded the trees and shrubs planted in the Grey Box and Don Anderson Reserve (100 in 2025 and 150 in 2024)
 Attended the Racecourse & Recreation Reserve Inc committee meetings x 2. Received $2000 for the committee to assist with maintenance at GBR. Ongoing discussion around piping the water from South Boundary to the Racecourse and the Golf Course through the GBR
 Met with Campaspe Shire with regard to access to the Grey Box Reserve for access to the clean the concrete drain. Cleared pest trees and fallen timber to improve access to the drain
 Met with Campaspe Shire project manager, Lou Costa and the earthmoving company with regard to the South Boundary Road Walking Trail Project that got underway late 2025
 Collecting cans for ‘cash for cans’ to raise money for KULG.
A special thanks to Neville Hunter for his time and plant knowledge to source the trees, shrubs and grasses that have been needed for recent planting days. Neville’s diligence is greatly appreciated!
Concerns:
 Campaspe Shire Council and Landcare Steering Committee meetings have not occurred in past 12-15 months
 GLMN Nest Box Workshop conducted in Kyabram in conjunction with KULG and Scouts. Nest boxes are
yet to be installed
 Entrance sign to GBR has been vandalised
 Campaspe Shire Council are releasing water through the concrete drain that is overtopping the drain and flooding the Grey Box Reserve. There is now substantial week growth in these wetter areas
 South Boundary Road agreements with Goulburn Murray Water and Campaspe Shire – clarification on the location of the built and planted areas is required.
Future Activities:
 150 years of Kyabram Wattle Day event in September
 Nest Box installation - coordinate with Dan Walker
 GBE Walking Trail from South Boundary Rd to the existing track @ 75 metres
 Maintain the GBR entrance from the Golf Course
With a hard working and enthusiastic committee and community engagement, the future of the Kyabram Urban Landcare Group looks promising as we continue to enhance the natural environment and provide safe spaces and food plants / bugs for local native wildlife mammals and birds and other endangered
critters.
It is both a privilege and an honor to serve the committee and the people of Kyabram through KULG.
