Last week, members of the Big Weather Committee and concerned Kyabram residents met with Nationals candidate for Murray Plains, Brett Hosking, to talk through the ongoing drainage issues impacting our town.
While stormwater drainage is primarily a local government responsibility, Kyabram is in a unique position. A section of the townโs stormwater system runs through the Kyabram Fauna Park, which is state government owned. State legislation relating to urban stormwater entering rural drainage systems also comes into play, meaning a long-term solution requires cooperation between multiple levels of government and agencies.
The meeting provided an opportunity to put the experiences and concerns of local residents directly on the table, particularly following the significant flooding experienced in March and the ongoing impacts on affected households.
The message from residents is clear: getting our foundational infrastructure right needs to be a priority. New developments and investment in our town mean little if the underlying drainage system continues to fail when we experience major rainfall.
This continues to be an ongoing issue - and one we will continue to fight for, advocate on and keep firmly on the agenda.
Thank you to everyone who continues to speak up, share their experiences and push for meaningful solutions.
