✨Vale Mary Bowman ✨

Last weekend, Kyabram lost one of its most dedicated and respected community leaders with the passing of Mary Bowman at the age of 93.

Mary’s contribution to our town and district spanned decades and leaves a legacy that will not be forgotten. She served with distinction as a Kyabram Town Councillor, became the final Mayor of Kyabram before local government amalgamation in 1994, and then made history as the inaugural Mayor of the newly formed Campaspe Shire.

Her commitment to community service extended far beyond local government. Mary was passionate about making Kyabram a better place for all, and her tireless advocacy saw her recognised as Kyabram’s Citizen of the Year in 1982. Through her leadership of the International Year of the Disabled Committee and countless other community initiatives, she demonstrated a genuine belief in inclusion, opportunity and community spirit.

Throughout her years of service, Mary played an important role in shaping the town we know today. Supporting local projects, fostering international friendships, or championing community causes, she approached every task with dedication, integrity and a deep love for Kyabram.

Mary’s leadership, vision and unwavering commitment to public service helped lay foundations that continue to benefit our community today. She was a pioneer, a mentor and a proud advocate for Kyabram.

On behalf of the community, we extend our sincere condolences to Mary’s family and friends. We thank them for sharing her with us for so many years.

Mary Bowman leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, leadership and community spirit. Her contribution to Kyabram and the wider Campaspe region will be remembered with gratitude and respect.

Rest peacefully, Mary.

A Funeral Mass for Mrs Mary Bowman will
be held at St Augustine’s Catholic Church, Church Street, Kyabram on Tuesday June 16, 2026 at 11am.

A big thank you to everyone who attended the recent town meeting and shared their thoughts & experiences on the March flood event.

A report from the meeting has been generated and will be distributed to attendees shortly. A subcommittee will be established to progress the key priorities and recommendations identified through community feedback.

The report highlights the strength and resilience of the Kyabram community, while also identifying opportunities for improved planning, communication and infrastructure management to better prepare for future flood events.

As we round out National Volunteers Week for 2026, we want to shout out to the volunteers and community groups who quietly keep Kyabram ticking over ~ we see you.

The Kyabram & District Historical Society Inc. & Hazelman’s Cottage volunteers preserving the stories of those who built this town. The walking encyclopaedias of Kyabram history. The working bees, restoration projects, research, storytelling and countless hours ensuring our history isn’t lost with time.

The Rotary Club of Kyabram, Lions Club of Kyabram Inc, the volunteers at Kyabram & District Health Services, Kyabram Community & Learning Centre (KCLC) … (just to name a few, there are so many more) volunteer drivers and community members who constantly show up, give back and support others without asking for recognition. Reliable. Consistent. Community-minded.

To the committees advocating for a fair go for Kyabram ~ it’s tiring and sometimes (often) defeating to constantly fight for a fair go for our town. But we see you & we thank you for making the stand and for always showing up.

And to every local sports club, kids sport, event committee and volunteer-run organisation (Breen Avenue Walking Track parkrun 👏🏼 Kyabram Little Athletics ~ just to name a few!) none of these opportunities happen without people willing to step up and bring it to life.

Volunteering looks different these days. Life is busier, families are stretched thinner and people are more time poor than ever before. But communities like ours still rely on good people willing to contribute where they can.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering ~ maybe this is your sign. Even a small amount of time can make a huge difference.

Kyabram still has a small country town heart because of people like you. ❤️🖤

Happy National Volunteer Week 👏🏼
