Luke had the fortune to be accepted as part of his adopted family and went on to be the hero of the Star Wars saga.
Anakin did not have this opportunity and we saw how that turned out.
On a basic level we can easily relate Luke’s familial supportive life to his positive outlook and Anakin’s loneliness to his immersion to the dark side.
Whilst it is more complicated than this as life experiences, trauma, genetic make up all factor in to who we ultimately become.
But your support network definitely plays a part.
Support networks aka Social relationships are an important predictor of health and well-being. Supportive social relationships assist people to cope with stress and may increase longevity.
Did you know that loneliness and social isolation can be understood as risk factors for poor health outcomes leading to a reduction of longevity, especially for those under 65 years of age.
Among the most important social ties are family ties.
However you may consider that some people are experiencing life with limited family like Anakin. Don’t forget that family isn’t just blood relations, it can also be “chosen family," which includes individuals like close friends, in-laws, step-relatives, and mentors who are committed to each other's well-being. This definition contrasts with the traditional one based solely on blood, marriage, or adoption, and emphasizes that loyalty, shared experiences, and mutual support are key components of a family.
This week reflect upon your chosen family, are you connecting or isolating yourself?
Reconnect as I guarantee it will bring health benefits and make your day.
