Next stop on our Kangaroo Island visit: the Penneshaw Campus of Kangaroo Island Community Education - KICE! 💙

Nine fabulous student leaders from every class showed us around, speaking articulately about what they’re learning and why it matters. A big thank you to Primrose, Lillian, Tas, Taliyah, Xavier, Blake, Noah, Marni and Ryan!

Learning was in full swing everywhere we went:
📚 Reception students proudly showed us they’ve mastered all 42 phonemes
🤸‍♂️ An onsite trampoline that the students love
📖 Year 7/8s were reviewing Once by Morris Gleitzman and shared their animation artwork

With around 70 students from R–8, Penneshaw is the smallest KICE campus, and it has a strong sense of belonging that shines through. Fortnightly assemblies give every student a voice, which comes in handy for the biennial whole-school production! 🎭

What a fantastic day at the Kingscote Campus of Kangaroo Island Community Education - KICE 💙

We were joined by Hunter, Dakota, Sunny & Azuki, a few of their outstanding students who guideed us around their R–12 school, from the Auto Engineering workshop, commercial-grade Food and Hospitality Centre, to the Performing Arts Centre showcasing stunning student artwork throughout their school.

Their stories showed just how many opportunities country students have to pursue their passions and make a difference:
🎖️ Winning the ANZAC Spirit School Prize and a trip to Europe
🎤 Speaking up for country kids as Rural Youth Ambassadors
🎶 Playing the hand pan and double bass
🏛️ Sharing ideas with federal decision-makers at the National Youth Forum in Canberra

Minister for Education, Training & Skills, Hon. Lucy Hood MP hosted the SASPA Board last night for our first formal dinner together, a warm and engaging evening and a great start to what we hope will be a strong, productive relationship. 👏

We discussed our five strategic priorities and shared insights from our Strategic Plan survey, where 84% of leaders named increasing complexity as their biggest challenge.

We also shared the student successes and great learning that bring us joy. It was a positive start to working together so leaders can lead well and every young person can thrive. 🙌

Fingers crossed for the Limestone Coast!

Congratulations to Grant High School and Limestone Coast Technical College, both finalists for the Education, Employment & Training Award at the 2026 Mount Gambier and Districts Business Awards.

Limestone Coast Technical College is also a finalist for Large Business of the Year, a great recognition of public education’s contribution to the region.

Winners will be announced on Friday 6 November at the Wulanda Recreation & Convention Centre, hosted by the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce. Watch this space, and best of luck to all our finalists!

What a privilege it was for Kirsty to join the Retired Secondary Principals’ Association of SA for lunch last week! 🙏

She shared an update on what SASPA is working on: our new strategy, curriculum and SACE, AI and assessment, and our Leading for Human Flourishing conferences. But she thinks she learnt more than she shared!

It was wonderful to talk with such wise people. Many are still thinking, writing and learning in retirement, and they generously shared their experience and ideas with her. She came away full of gratitude and with lots to reflect on.

Meet Mitchell Odegaard, a 2019 Salisbury High graduate, who came back to his old school to share what first sparked his interest in civil engineering: the Equilibrium workshop. 🙌

Students design a network of pipes and joints to fill three reservoirs equally, and as Mitch found, it’s harder than it looks. The workshop taught him teamwork, problem solving and how engineers balance competing demands on real projects.
This was a great opportunity to showcase to students around the range of opportunities there are within STEM! 👏

Last Friday, we held the final day of our LIFT Exec Program for 2026! 🙌

To close the program, we had our facilitators, Mari Omand (Assistant Principal, Seaview High School) & Mackella Jeffrey (Assistant Principal, Seaton High School) work with our attendees through their current challenges that our leaders are experiencing and working together to find solutions that they can use back at their site. ✨

In the afternoon, we were joined by Prof. Martin Westwell (Chief Executive, Department for Education) who spoke to our leaders about the importance of our leaders within the schools and how to implement the DfE Strategy. 👏

A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved over the 3 day program and we hope our attendees left with lots of take aways to bring back to their schools and have created new connections with leaders from across South Australia! 🤝

Kirsty (SASPA, Chief Executive) is currently attending the ICP Conference in New Zealand and had the privilege to visit Manurewa Intermediate School, a Years 7–8 school with a powerful mantra: every child deserves happy childhood memories, purposeful challenge and the chance to succeed. 👏

As students proudly took us on a tour of their beautiful indoor and outdoor learning spaces, it was obvious how much they valued their school, respected their teachers and genuinely loved being there. That sense of belonging is reflected in an extraordinary 93–96% attendance rate, particularly impressive in one of Auckland’s lowest socioeconomic communities. 🙌

Equally evident was the absolute dedication of the staff. High expectations are matched with high levels of support: students are met where they are, challenged, and supported to take their next step. We heard that many students arrive with literacy and numeracy levels more typical of 6- or 7-year-olds, yet by the time they leave, most are achieving at or above age-appropriate levels. An incredible testament to students and staff alike.

Kirsty (SASPA, Chief Executive) had the privilege to begin the International Confederation of Principals Council meeting yesterday morning with a very special welcome from the staff and students of Western Springs College | Ngā Puna o Waiōrea in Auckland. ☀️

The welcome was through a Pōwhiri, conducted largely in te reo Māori and grounded in Māori tikanga. It was a powerful and generous way to bring people from around the world together, made even more special knowing that staff and students had given up part of their Sunday to welcome them and share their culture, language and place. 🙌

The setting itself was equally inspiring. Western Springs College describes itself as a waka hourua, a double-hulled canoe, bringing together English-medium Western Springs College and Māori-medium immersion kura Ngā Puna o Waiōrea. The two schools operate collaboratively on the one site, with students moving between them according to their year level and course choices. ✨

A wonderful reminder, as they begin our international conversations about school leadership, that education is deeply connected to culture, identity, community and belonging.
Kirsty thanks the students and staff who welcomed them so warmly, a memorable beginning to their time together. 👏
