Today we visited Hill Top Primary School for two reasons

One was to say thankyou and farewell to the Principal, Mark Gardiner who is relocating to take up the position of Executive Principal of Wilcannia School. For 14 years Mark has been not only a great supporter of the brigade but also a great supporter of community events.

Mark approached us about utilising the two large water tanks located in the school grounds for fire fighting purposes. We would like to thank Reece Plumbing for supplying all the equipment needed, Brent from Colo Vale Plumbing who worked out the design and did all the work necessary, the staff of Hill Top School for their help and Southern Highlands RFS for their support.

This is a great asset for the community and the RFS.

We again thank Mark for his leadership and support. We wish him great success.

Thankyou to the Hill Top War Memorial Committee and the Hill Top Community Association who raised funds to the value of $1071.34 to assist the brigade to purchase a thermal camera. This morning they invited us to a morning tea to celebrate.

A big thank you to our Hill Top crew members who assisted with the Yerrinbool South and Boronia Park Sportsgrounds burn. Also a big Thankyou to National Parks crews (who also supplied the crews with food and goodie bags) they travelled from all over the place and had crew members join them from way out west (known as the Flatlanders), RFS Mitigation crew members and the many brigades who came from near and far to assist - Taralga, Illawarra and across the Greater Sydney area plus our local crews. RFS Southern Highlands Support Brigade for their lunches and goodie bags plus all the other things they get asked to do.

Special thanks to Raf Pedroza and his NPWS staff plus the RFS staff who have put many hours and lots of miles and shoe leather into these burns.

The Yerrinbool South burn has taken a number of years to happen as the window of opportunity to carry out the burn is narrow.

The Official Bush Fire Danger Period will conclude at midnight tomorrow (31 March 2026) for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council LGA's.

From Wednesday 1 April, fire permits will no longer be required for residents, except those properties within the town limits of Warragamba, Picton, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Bowral and Bundanoon, who are required to obtain a fire permit from Fire & Rescue NSW all year round.

Even though a fire permit is no longer required, you must still notify your neighbours and the local fire authority 24 hours before burning as well as comply with any Council Backyard Burning Policies.

Before lighting up, you should also check the forecast weather conditions and have sufficient equipment on hand to control and contain the fire to your own property. Failure to notify neighbours or the RFS, or allowing a fire to escape can result in significant fines.

To notify of your intent to burn, use the online burn notification tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or call your local Fire Control Centre during business hours.

The Bush Fire Danger Period ends on 31 March. From 1 April pile burns can be conducted without a fire permit.
Please check the Wingecarribee Council website to ensure your property is eligible to have a fire. Remember, you have to complete an online Burn Notification on the RFS web site. Notify your neighbours before you burn. Stay safe and remember it’s not an excuse to burn rubbish.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a life member of our Brigade, Freda Ayoub. Freda died on the 3 March 2026.

Our older members will remember Freda as a lady with a great sense of humour and a major determination to fund raise to assist the brigade. For many years at our garage sales she produced numerous containers of tabouli, many people preordered and picked up on the day.

When her health was good she was an avid supporter and worker in the Canteen/Support brigade.

Fundraising never left her mind and whilst living at The Abbey so took orders and made crotchet blankets, all moneys made donated to the brigade.

Freda’s funeral is on Wednesday 18 March, 2026 at St Stephens, Mittagong. 11am.
