Alternatives to Violence Project Queensland

Alternatives to Violence Project Queensland AVPQ is a growing community of people who support those actively seeking nonviolent solutions to conflict. Where did AVP start? How did AVP come to Australia?

Members share experiences, skills, information and their time. It is a multicultural, autonomous, non-profit association, within a global network. In 1975 a group of inmates in Greenhaven Penitentiary in New York State, USA, were worried about the level of violence in the prison. They approached the local Quaker group to help, as the Quakers had been used as marshalls in the Anti-Vietnam marches a

nd had helped to minimise police/protester confrontation during the marches. The Quaker group, along with other interested parties, designed a workshop based on many exercises and games available from the public domain. In 1975, the exercises were gathered into a Basic Manual. All 3 levels of AVP manuals were published by 1985. The manual's disposition, themes and workshop activities emerge out of a spiritual concept, Transforming Power. This term was coined in 1960 by Larry Apsey who was influenced by Gandhi's Satyagraha and Martin Luther King's Beloved Community. The Philosophy Page expands upon these themes. AVP came to Queensland in 1990, when Steve Angell from Pennsylvania (who developed the AVP Mandala, and toured USA and the world) conducted a series of AVP workshops in Queensland and NSW. Steve Angell was brought to Australia by Relaxed Ron and Louise Hunter, who thought AVP could bring a positive energy into Australian Correctional Centres. Ron still works with AVPQ and Louise is actively involved in AVP Victoria. The first AVP Prison Workshop in Australia was run in Moreton Correctional Centre in Wacol, Brisbane in April 1991. The workshop was very successful and since then AVPQ workshops have been held in Queensland at Moreton B, Borallon, Sir David Longlands, the Brisbane Women's Prison, Woodford, and Toowoomba jails. The organisation, Alternatives to Violence Queensland Inc. (AVPQ), was incorporated in 1992. Since that time, AVPQ has continued to be active, conducting workshops in prisons throughout Queensland and establishing community workshops in and around Brisbane.

1. There is something good in everyone.
2. A nonviolent outcome is always possible.
3. Change yourself first.
3. Transforming Power is a skill — and like all skills, it must be practised.

These are the four principles at the heart of AVP — the Alternatives to Violence Project — a global community active in more than 60 countries, including right here in Queensland since 1990.
We do not believe that conflict is inevitable or that violence is human nature. We believe that every person carries within them the capacity to transform even the most difficult situations.

That capacity has a name. We call it Transforming Power.

And we run free, hands-on workshops where you can start practising it. ❤️

"By the time morning tea came around I realised that the violence was inside my head. I had a constant stream of negative talk about myself — critical, judgmental voices that stopped me from being present and happy. The realisations and changes I made in that first weekend brings me back to AVP again and again."

One of our members said this about their first AVP workshop — back in 1998. They had walked in thinking: "I don't have violence in my life."
Each time they return, they go deeper — moving closer to the relationships and the life they want.
This is what AVP does. Not just for people in crisis — for all of us.

Could this be you? We'd love to have you in our community and invite you for a free workshop.

Ever wondered what actually happens inside an AVP workshop? No lectures. No homework. No one telling you what to think.

An AVP (Alternatives to Violence Project) workshop is two days of hands-on, experiential learning — built entirely around the shared experiences of the people in the room. Here is what you might find yourself doing:

🎭 Role plays — exploring real conflict situations and trying out new responses on your feet
🤝 Trust exercises — literally closing your eyes and letting someone guide you
🗣️ Small group conversations — honest, intimate, self-reflective
😂 Games and energisers — yes, it is often genuinely joyful
🔄 Processing circles — reflecting on what just happened and what it means for you

It is playful. It is sometimes uncomfortable in the best way. It is practical. And it is deeply human. AVP is not therapy. It is not religious. There is no agenda to convert you to anything. Open to all genders, backgrounds, beliefs and walks of life — and it is free. ❤️
The only requirement: a willingness to show up honestly.

Did you know that narcissism has significantly increased since the late 1970s? And that according to one survey, more than half of young people today say they want to be "influencers"?
AVP offers a countercurrent to that trend — what a recent article in The Atlantic calls a "quieter ego": a way of being that listens, reflects, and makes room for others without losing yourself. Read the full article in the comments.

It echoes exactly what we mean by Transforming Power. Every AVP workshop builds the same muscles: humility, self-awareness, and the willingness to see things from someone else's side.
Want to explore what a quieter ego — and a louder kind of peace — could look like for you?

"Be the change you want to see in the world."
We all struggle with anger and conflict at times. And yet, as human beings, we also carry a deep desire to help one another.
For decades, AVP has worked across communities, prisons, schools, and refugee settings worldwide — and distilled that experience into hands-on workshops and manuals covering topics such as Anger Management, Help Increase the Peace, and Best Practices for Workshop Facilitators.
There is something for everyone.

AVP is not for naive people who think conflict will just disappear.
It is for people who are done waiting for someone else to fix it.
The Alternatives to Violence Project is a global grassroots network — active right here in Queensland since 1990 — built on one radical idea: that ordinary people can transform violence, starting with themselves.
Our workshops are for everyone. Community members, students, people in prisons, refugees, all genders, all backgrounds. No qualifications. No judgment.
Just real, hands-on work toward something better.
