Monday was a very busy night for our Scouts and Venturers! ๐Ÿ•๏ธ๐ŸŽญ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The night involved lightweight packing theory and practice, patrol planning, and costume preparation for the upcoming Weekend Wide Game. Everyone worked together getting organised and ready for a huge weekend ahead.

Of course, there was still time for some fun, with games of Souths and Marshmallow Cricket keeping everyone entertained and laughing! ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ

Great teamwork, planning, and plenty of Scout spirit on display. We canโ€™t wait to see all the photos and hear the stories from the weekend ahead! ๐Ÿ“ธโ›บ

Bring a Friend Night for Joeys & Cubsโ€ฆ and what a night it was! ๐ŸŽ‰ 20 Friends!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along โ€” the night was a massive success!. Like true Scouts, we had to pivot at the last minute thanks to the weather, and our planned outdoor activities quickly became a fun-filled indoor adventure instead. ๐ŸŒง๏ธโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

Tonight the Joeys and Cubs played Apples, put up tents, coloured in compasses, and the friends learnt their first knot, and even had a go at making a sling after mastering the Reef Knot. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿชข

It was fantastic to see so many new faces joining in, learning new skills, and having fun together.

Thank you again to everyone who came along โ€” we hope to see you back again next week! ๐Ÿ™‚

Joeys & Cubs Pet Night ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฎ

What a night! Our Joeys and Cubs had a fantastic evening learning all about caring for animals through the seasons, thanks to Tim from Monaro Veterinary Clinic.

Tim shared loads of interesting information about looking after all kinds of animals in winter and summer โ€” from cows and sheep to dogs, cats and more! The kids even got hands-on and had a go at โ€œdesexingโ€ a teddy bear ๐Ÿงธ๐Ÿ˜‚ to finding the animals heartbeat with a stethoscope. There were plenty of laughs and a lot of fun had by all.

Afterwards, each Joey and Cub gave a short presentation about their own pets. It was wonderful to see every child get up in front of their peers and give public speaking a go with confidence and courage.

As part of the night, the Joeys and Cubs also collected and donated blankets for the Cooma Pound through a community donation drive to help keep local animals warm this winter โ„๏ธ๐Ÿพ

The group meet with Mayor Chris and local rangers to officially hand over the blanket donations and learn more about the important work they do within our community.

Bravo, young ones ๐Ÿ‘

A huge thank you again to Tim for giving up his time to support our youth members and make the night so engaging and memorable and for being such a good sport.

Lightweight Camp Cooking Theory & Practice ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ”ฅ

This was a great opportunity for some of our younger and newer youth members to learn and practice core camping skills in preparation for the upcoming Weekend Wide Games, as well as future camps and hikes.

The night covered camp meal planning, hygiene, basic first aid, and lightweight cooking and cleaning skills โ€” all important parts of becoming more confident and independent out in the field.

A big thank you to Vennies and our adult helpers for assisting throughout the night ๐Ÿ™‚

Alongside helping with the cooking activities, the Ventures also spent time working on compass and map skills with Nifty.

๐Ÿšจ Cubs & Joeys SES Night ๐Ÿšจ

What an awesome night our Joeys and Cubs had visiting the SES! The kids got a hands-on look at all the cool machinery and equipment inside the rescue trucks โ€” including stretchers, the jaws of life, rescue gear and some very cool lights! ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ”ฆ

A big thank you to Luke, who was a great sport and volunteered to be the โ€œpatientโ€ needing rescue ๐Ÿ˜„ The kids learnt how to tie a clove hitch to help secure him safely before working together as a team to complete a group lift and carry him to safety. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ‘

It was fantastic to see the teamwork, problem solving and confidence from all of our youth members throughout the night.

This week all sections across 1stCooma Scouts took part in rescue activities, building valuable life skills while having plenty of fun along the way.

A huge thank you to the SES volunteers for giving up their time to teach and inspire our young people! ๐Ÿšจ

๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿงญ Scouts & Venturers: Orienteering Search & Rescue Night ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ”ฅ

What a fantastic evening out in the bush around the hall! Our Scouts and Venturers took on a hands-on Search & Rescue challenge, working in separate patrols to test their skills, teamwork, and resilience.

Using clues, navigation knowledge, and plenty of problem solving, each group set out to locate, treat and safely extricate their โ€œmissing/injuredโ€ mascots โ€” all while racing against the clock! โฑ๏ธ

Along the way, they:
๐Ÿ“ก Communicated at each checkpoint back to HQ using proper radio channels, phonetic alphabet, and great etiquette
๐Ÿงญ Applied compass theory and navigation skills from previous sessions
๐Ÿ•๏ธ Put bushwalking and bushcraft planning into action
Key skills in action included:
โœ… Bushwalking preparation & safety (right gear, clothing, and knowledge)
๐Ÿชข Knots & lashings โ€” building stretcher systems for carry-outs
๐Ÿฉน First aid, with a focus on identifying and treating hypothermia
๐Ÿ“ Location identification using bearings, maps and trail signs
๐Ÿ“ป Effective radio use and communication under pressure

The night finished with reflection โ€” not only on how the โ€œlost mascotsโ€ could have planned better, but also what each patrol did well and where they can improve next time.

A brilliant effort from both Scouts and Venturers, stepping up, supporting each other, and building real-world skills in a fun, challenging environment. ๐Ÿ‘

Community Sound Upgrade Brings Big Benefits to 1st Cooma Scout Hall: BRAVO Snowy Hydro

Exciting improvements have arrived at the 1st Cooma Scout Hall, with brand-new acoustic panelling now installed thanks to the generous support of a grant from Snowy Hydro.

The upgrade is already making a noticeable difference for the many Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, leaders, and families who use the hall each week. With multiple groups often meeting, learning, and having fun in the same space, noise levels could quickly build up and create echoes throughout the hall.

The new acoustic panels help absorb sound and reduce echo, creating a calmer, clearer, and more comfortable environment for everyone. The result? Easier conversations, better focus during activities, and a much more enjoyable atmosphere.

Members have already been quick to share their excitement about the change.
One Cub Scout happily announced, โ€œI donโ€™t need to yell anymore โ€” the echo is gone!โ€ while a volunteer leader joked, โ€œI can hear myself think!โ€

Importantly, the upgrade also helps create a more inclusive environment for young people with sensory sensitivities, making the hall a welcoming space where all youth members can comfortably participate, learn, and connect.

The 1st Cooma Scouts would like to extend a huge thank you to Snowy Hydro for investing in local youth and supporting projects that strengthen our community.

This fantastic improvement will benefit generations of Scouts to come, and members are excited to enjoy the upgraded hall for many years ahead.
