Before my house burnt down on the 23rd of January 2020. In my role as Wildcare's (NSW) Koala Coordinator, I organised for a team from the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital to come down to our area to help with the search and rescue. Not long after checking this echidna's feet to make sure they were not burnt, I spotted a koala in a tree. With the help of Port Macquarie team we rescued the koala. We called off the search after this, because the wind had picked up and the risk of previously burnt branches falling was too high. This was the first koala rescued in the Numeralla area during the Black Summer Bushfires. With the amazing help from the Australian National University and the great veterinary efforts, this koala was one of the 78% successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild.
