On Saturday afternoon 20 people from the Kedron Wavell RSL Sub Branch were picked up by Cross Country Tours (bus), on route to Rydges Southbank to enjoy a fantastic night out enjoying the 28th annual Riverfire event, which is one of highlights of the Brisbane Festival.
Picking up extra people from the Roma Street Bus station we then battled our way through the traffic finally arriving safely at Rydges Southbank. It didn't help our cause with the Brisbane City Cats not operating due to industrial action.
On arrival at the hotel, we were greeted by staff from Cross Country Tours who directed us by lift up to the Level 12.
This is the rooftop level of Rydges Southbank and provides wonderful views overlooking the Southbank Parklands, Brisbane River and Brisbane C*D.
It also provided the perfect vantage point to take photos of the RAAF F/A 18F Super Hornets from No.1 Squadron and the C-17A Globemaster iii from No.36 Squadron, both aircraft are stationed at RAAF Base Amberley.
What a sight to behold firstly seeing the Globemaster, but the real action was from the Super Hornets, this is where you needed a quality camera.
After the display of precision flying by the RAAF, we adjourned back to our tables to enjoy free - flowing drinks, a three-course meal and live entertainment, with fellow members and partners, leading up to the spectacular pyrotechnic display of Riverfire from our superbly positioned 12th floor roof top function room.
Everyone from Kedron Wavell RSL Sub Branch thoroughly enjoyed this special occasion.
Overall, Cross Country Tours who organise this event every two years did a superb job and a special thank you should go out to the management and staff for all the hard work that was put into making this a successful and wonderful occasion.
