What wonderful news to share today! Congratulations to all Queenslanders recognised in the King's Birthday Honours, and in particular to two familiar and much loved faces in our community who have been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.

Usha Chandra has dedicated decades of her life to multicultural engagement and supporting Indian-Australian community initiatives across Brisbane and Queensland. It is a richly deserved recognition of her tireless commitment to bringing communities together and celebrating the cultural diversity that makes our city so special.

And to Ken Roma, President of the Kedron Wavell RSL Sub Branch Inc, congratulations on a thoroughly deserved OAM. Ken's dedication to supporting veterans and his outstanding leadership within the RSL community reflects everything that is best about service to others.

To both Usha and Ken, our community is so proud. What a wonderful and fitting honour.

A special congratulations to Ken Roma, President of the Kedron-Wavell RSL Sub Branch, on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). This honour is a fitting recognition of Ken’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to supporting veterans and our local community.

Well deserved, Ken, and congratulations to all other recipients.

Congratulations to all recipients recognised in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List for their outstanding service and contributions to our community and nation.

The Governor-General has announced the King’s Birthday Honours List for 2026, recognising 142 exceptional Queenslanders for their outstanding contributions to the community, public service, the professions, emergency services and the Australian Defence Force.

From community leaders and volunteers to innovators, educators and frontline personnel, each recipient reflects the breadth and depth of service across our State and the lasting impact of dedication, leadership and care for others.

Their contributions—whether felt locally, across Queensland or on the national stage—are an inspiration, exemplifying the very best of our community.

Government House congratulates all Queensland recipients on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to welcoming them to Investiture Ceremonies later this year.

"Lest We Forget"

THERE'S A SYMBOL

There's a symbol that says we're Australian.
There's a symbol that mirrors our pride.
It's a symbol that's ousted the alien.
It's a symbol for which we have died.

And this symbol was worn by the millions
of Australians from all walks of life.
They were farmers and teachers, civilians.
who would sacrifice family and wife.

So then what is this icon that triggers
other nations to hold us in awe?
It's the Aussie slouch hat that our diggers
displayed proudly when they went to war.

It was issued along with their backpacks,
and was waved leaving Circular Quay.
It was stained with the blood of the Anzacs,
and went down with our dead in the sea.

It was shredded by shrapnel from landmines,
and gave shade from Tobruk's desert sky.
It was worn when our prisoners built rail lines
like that infamous bridge on the Kwai.

It got soaked fighting Japanese forces,
and got torn on barbed-wire, Fromelles.
It got used as a trough by our horses,
at Bathsheba when charging the wells.

And it swatted those blowflies at Changi
murdered mozzies in New Guinea's rain.
And that hat was tossed high with the victory
when the world resumed peace once again.

While this hat may have had many uses,
there is one that is clearly supreme.
When a digger wears this then he chooses,
to belong to a legendary team.

For this slouch represents a real presence,
of those wearing this hat when they fell.
So it's pride, gratitude and remembrance
that our modern day diggers know well.

There's a symbol that's part of our story.
There's a symbol our diggers still wear.
It's a slouch hat that's covered in glory.
For when tyrants oppressed it was there.
Yes, when tyrants oppressed it was there.
