Nature reserves exist to protect wildlife not kill it!

In the 11 June edition of Canberra CityNews, two powerful letters questioned why native animals are being targeted in places meant to keep them safe.

One challenged the ongoing shooting of kangaroos and wallabies in ACT nature reserves. The other raised concerns about proposals for aerial shooting of dingoes, Australia's native apex predator and a vital part of healthy ecosystems.

The contradiction is impossible to ignore: if nature reserves are for conservation, why are native animals being killed within them?

We believe it's time to move beyond outdated lethal control and invest in genuine conservation: protecting habitat, supporting coexistence, and using science to safeguard wildlife, not justify its destruction.

Nature reserves should be sanctuaries, not shooting zones!

Tomorrow, kangaroos will be shot en masse at Benalla Golf Club.

These healthy, sentient animals will be killed in a matter of hours as part of a planned lethal cull, unless immediate action is taken.

Marco Melandri joins LAV’s campaign calling for an end to kangaroo leather race suits 🦘🏍️

🗣️ “I wore those suits for years without ever wondering what they were made of. Now I know.”

The 2002 250cc World Champion has become the face of LAV’s “Ride Smart. Go K-Free!” campaign, which will be present at Mugello with a giant inflatable kangaroo and awareness materials for fans.

Melandri is urging riders and manufacturers to move toward animal-free alternatives in motorsport equipment.

🗣️ “It’s important to protect others too — and in this case, animals.”

According to LAV, 89% of riders across MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3, and WorldSBK still use suits containing kangaroo leather inserts.

The campaign argues modern synthetic materials can now offer similar safety and performance without relying on animal leather.

🗣️ “I’m convinced it’s only a matter of time before we see a major brand take a different path.”

LAV is calling on brands, teams, Dorna, FIM, and riders to support a transition toward 100% animal-free racing suits by 2027.
