Young Artist Showcase: Jia-Peng Yeung ✨

Australian baritone Jia-Peng Yeung holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours Class I) from The University of Queensland and was the recipient of The University of Queensland and St Leo’s College Music Achievement Scholarship in 2018 and 2019.

Jia-Peng starred as part of the ensemble in our 2024 production with Circa, Dido & Aeneas and joined our Young Artist Program in 2025. Since joining the program, he has become a familiar face on our stages, performing in both seasons of La Cenerentola, and most recently featuring in Rusalka.

Into the Woods Artist Spotlight 🌲✨

Introducing Tom Oliver (Jack), Carla Beard (Little Red Riding Hood) and Darcy Brown (Cinderella's Prince/Wolf).

Tom Oliver is a Gold Matilda Award winning performer and producer from Brisbane having appeared in leading roles across every Australian state and globally. He is also the Founder and CEO/Artistic Director of Wynnum Fringe Festival and Queensland Fringe.

Carla Beard is a Bachelor of Musical Theatre graduate from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (QCGU). Carla received a Matilda Award nomination for Best Performance in a Supporting Role – Independent Production for their portrayal of Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods (Ad Astra).

Darcy is a graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and has featured in Calamity Jane (Queensland Theatre Company) and the international tour of Peter Pan Goes Wrong (Mischief Theatre/Lunchbox Productions). Amongst his theatrical career, you can watch Darcy in Glitch on Netflix, Deadloch on Amazon and Why Are You Like This? on ABC/Netflix.

Artist Spotlight: Madeleine Stephens ✨

Soprano, actor and director, Madeleine Stephens holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and a Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies from Queensland University of Technology.

Maddie began her journey as a Young Artist at Opera Queensland in 2025 and has starred in an array of productions including regional tour, All Together Now! (2025 & 2026), Festival of Outback Opera (2026) and will star in our upcoming touring production, Bravo!.

Earlier this week, Opera Queensland artists Jason Barry-Smith, Nick Kirkup and Catherine Broadstock facilitated a three day workshop at Springwood State High School.

Throughout the workshop, students learned a repertoire of songs and developed their vocal performance skills. The program concluded with a special performance, where students showcased what they had learned to an audience of family and friends.

Our workshops are designed to introduce school students to the world of opera and nurture their understanding and appreciation of the artform. What a wonderful experience it was to inspire and connect with students through the power of opera 🤍

Opera Queensland Young Artist alumnus, Lachlann Lawton stars in our new touring production, Bravo! ✨

Lachlann recently auditioned on The Voice, Australia and wowed the judges, turning four chairs. Congratulations Lachlann! He is well known to Opera Queensland audiences, having featured in productions including La bohème (2025) and Dido and Aeneas (2024).

We are so thrilled to have him as part of our Bravo! cast. Presented with warmth and humour, Bravo! is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for audiences of all ages and levels of familiarity with opera. You can expect to hear much-loved music by Puccini, Verdi, Mozart, Bizet and more.

On the weekend Alexandra Flood, Jonathan Henderson and Vatche Jambazian performed to packed audiences their recital, Nothing Like a Dame - a tribute to Dame Joan Sutherland.

Opening at Redland Performing Arts Centre and followed by two performances at Opera Queensland, audiences were in awe of the talented trio and their musical excellence.

Young Artist Showcase: Aylish Ryan ✨

Mezzo-soprano and 2026 Melba Opera Trust Artist, Aylish Ryan, completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, graduating with distinction in 2024.

Aylish received glowing reviews for her performances at the 2026 Festival of Outback Opera and starred in her first mainstage production as The Kitchen-Hand (Rusalka) this year. Aylish was also recently named a finalist in the IFAC HANDA Australian Singing Competition this year!
