36 years ago today, the WHO removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases, which led to IDAHOBIT.

Domestic violence doesn’t look the same for everyone. And no one should have to choose between their identity and their safety.

We want to recognise IDAHOBIT not only as a celebration of progress, but as a reminder of the work still to be done.

Support starts with love 💜

When someone shares their experience of domestic and family violence (DFV), how we respond matters.

Meaningful support isn’t just about what we do; it’s about how we show up.

You deserve to feel safe and respected in your relationships 🏳️‍🌈

Domestic and family violence (DFV) in LGBTQ+ relationships can look similar to what people expect, but it can also show up in ways that are tied to stigma and discrimination.

Swipe to learn some of the signs 👉

Not all abuse is obvious. And not all relationships are treated the same when it comes to support, which can make it harder to speak up or reach out.

But recognising these signs is the first step.

Inclusion matters ❤️

Support services don’t always reflect the full picture, especially for people with intersecting identities, like being both q***r and Indigenous.

When people can’t see themselves in the resources meant to support them, it can create distance, mistrust, and missed opportunities for real help.

This clip is a moment to pause and reflect.

Who are your materials speaking to?
And just as importantly, who is missing?

Creating inclusive, representative resources isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s essential.

Not all attention is love 😔

Sometimes what feels like intense affection at the start can actually be love bombing 🚩 — overwhelming messages, fast-moving emotions, or pressure that doesn’t leave space for your comfort.

Healthy affection looks different 💚
It grows over time, respects your boundaries, and makes you feel safe, not rushed.

Save this post so you can come back to it, and share it with someone who might need it.

Respect isn’t just a green flag, it’s the foundation 💚

In healthy relationships, respect shows up in the everyday moments… being heard, having your boundaries honoured, and feeling supported for exactly who you are.

For our community, these signs matter even more. Everyone deserves a partner who listens without judgment, communicates openly, and celebrates their identity, not just accepts it.

Take a moment to reflect… what does respect look like to you? Drop your green flags in the comments and help others recognise what they deserve 💬

Visibility matters, but so does safety 🏳️‍⚧️

This Trans Day of Visibility, we recognise and celebrate our trans and gender diverse community.

We also acknowledge that for many, this moment comes amid ongoing challenges and setbacks. As a Foundation, we stand with you, and we’re here to support you.

We know that trans and gender diverse people experience domestic and family violence too, often in ways that remain unseen, unsupported, or misunderstood.

Domestic and family violence doesn’t just happen in intimate relationships. For LGBTIQA+ people, it can also occur within families, sometimes as a response to identity or sexuality.

At the same time, trans and gender diverse survivors are often left out of the systems meant to support them. Many services don’t feel equipped to respond, national policy and data collection still fail to fully count LGBTIQA+ communities in, and media narratives can shift focus onto a person’s identity rather than the use of violence itself.

Research, including work by the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS), continues to show just how significant these gaps are, and why inclusive, informed responses matter.

A week on, and we’re still thinking about all the good energy at Fair Day 🏳️‍🌈

Let’s carry that energy forward, with each other’s safety and wellbeing at the centre of the rest of Mardi Gras season.

At the LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation, we’re here to make sure every member of our community feels seen, heard, and believed 🌈

Over 60% of LGBTQ people will experience domestic or family violence in their lifetime, and 72% may never tell a soul. That’s why our work matters. We’re here to change that story, shedding light on the unique realities of q***r relationships and validating experiences that are too often overlooked.

As we celebrate pride and community, let’s also look out for one another. If a friend doesn’t seem like themselves, start the conversation. You could be the first person to offer the hope and support they need.
