Project Yumi is an Australian registered charity that builds effective partnerships with local communities in Papua New Guinea, to enhance the quality of education and health care. Project Yumi was founded by a group of friends, all with connections to Papua New Guinea, who were sick of talking about the injustices and inequalities that the people of Papua New Guinea faced, and instead wanted to t

ake action. Having visited rural villages and noticing how under resourced and neglected the schools and health centres were, the team knew that they could utilise many quality used resources within Australia, that would otherwise go to landfill, to make a difference within rural communities. Through their connections in the education and health sectors here in Australia, the team was able to obtain and overwhelming amount of donations and support which assisted them in achieving their first project delivery. Since inception the Project Yumi team have been able to reach twelve provinces and deliver much needed educational and health resources to forty different organisations. Apart from their impact on the education and health sector through their Project Skul, Bush Dokta and Pass it on Project Initiatives, the Project Yumi team has also implemented an empowerment program, Project Wok, that supports economic growth for the country and demonstrates the capabilities of PNG youth. Moving forward, Project Yumi is motivated to continue supplying sustainable and achievable outcomes through assisting communities in rural areas of Papua New Guinea.

Project Wok equips young Papua New Guineans with the skills, confidence and support they need to transition from education to employment through job readiness training, mentoring and work experience opportunities.

With over 2,800 young people reached and 3,000+ volunteer mentor hours invested, Project Wok is creating opportunities, building confidence and empowering the next generation of leaders in Papua New Guinea.

Project Yumi was proud to deliver two cartons of maternity packs to Sigere Health Centre in Unggai Bena District, Eastern Highlands Province, through our Project Meri initiative and delivery partnership with Waniati Maternal Waiting Home .

These packs contain essential maternity and labour ward items that help ensure expectant mothers have access to safer, more dignified care during pregnancy and childbirth. Every delivery brings us one step closer to improving maternal and newborn health in some of Papua New Guinea’s most remote communities.

A heartfelt thank you to Sr. Susie Hafai from Sigere Health Centre and the dedicated team at Waniati Maternal Waiting Home for their ongoing commitment to supporting women and families. Your partnership and tireless work are making a lasting impact on the lives of mothers who need it most.

A brighter future starts with a single light.

When Project Yumi visited Inauabui Primary School to donate 500 SolarBuddy lights, we didn't just deliver a valuable resource—we spent time talking with the students whose lives will be changed by them.

Thanks to the generous support of Kramer Asia Pacific, SolarBuddy, and our partnership with the Institute of Engineers Papua New Guinea, students also took part in an interactive session where they learned about solar energy and how to care for their new lights.

We asked two students what receiving a SolarBuddy light means to them and their responses are a powerful reminder that access to something as simple as light can mean more time to study, complete homework, read, and dream of a brighter future.

Recently Project Yumi had an amazing opportunity to deliver 500 SolarBuddy lights to Inauabui Primary School and the impact was immediately felt by the school community.

Inauabui Primary school Chairman Andrew shared, these solar lights will make a big impact for students as there is very limited access to electricity in their LLG, now students will be able to continue learning after dark.

This is the power of partnership.

Lighting the way for brighter futures!

Thanks to our incredible partners
Kramer Asia Pacific and SolarBuddy.org, Project Yumi was proud to donate 500 SolarBuddy lights to Inauabui Primary School in Central Province.
This was more than just a donation. Through our partnership with the Institute of Engineers Papua New Guinea, engineer Josh joined our team to deliver an interactive session explaining how solar energy works and demonstrating how to use and care for the lights.

By turning the handover into an educational experience, students gained valuable knowledge while receiving a resource that will benefit them for years to come.
The feedback from students and school leaders was inspiring. They shared that these solar lights will allow children to study safely at night, giving them more time to complete homework, read and continue learning after the sun goes down.

A huge thank you to Kramer Asia Pacific, SolarBuddy and the Institute of Engineers Papua New Guinea for helping us create brighter opportunities for students. Together, we're not just delivering resources, we're empowering the next generation through education.

Helping improve cervical cancer screening and treatment in Papua New Guinea

This colposcope was donated by Project Yumi to the Santos Foundation as part of Project Meri initiative.

The Santos Foundation then gifted the equipment to the Southern Highlands Provincial Health Authority for use at Mendi Hospital’s Well Women’s Clinic.

A colposcope is a specialised medical device used to closely examine the cervix following an abnormal cervical screening result. It plays a vital role in detecting pre-cancerous changes early, enabling timely diagnosis and treatment before cervical cancer develops.

As Dr Martin Sa’avu, Director of Curative Health Services for the Southern Highlands Provincial Health Authority, shared:

We appreciate the support with the donation of the equipment (colposcope) for our Well Women’s Clinic to support screening and treatment of cervical cancer. Thank you.”

This donation reflects Project Yumi’s ongoing commitment through Project Meri to improving access to quality women’s healthcare. We are grateful to the Santos Foundation for ensuring this life-saving equipment reached the women who need it most, helping strengthen cervical cancer screening and treatment services in the Southern Highlands.

One of the many moments that reminds us why partnerships matter.

Through our valued partnership with SolarBuddy.org and the incredible support of our local delivery partner Charles Bilgan, Project Yumi donated solar lights and headlamps to Gomgale Sub-Health Centre in Gumine District, Simbu Province.

Serving seven major tribal communities, the health centre provides vital healthcare in a remote area where access to reliable electricity is limited. For the dedicated health workers, treating patients at night had always been a significant challenge.

The solar lights and headlamps were presented to Mr Simon Waken, a Certified Nursing Officer who has served the Gomgale community for more than 23 years, and Ms Julie Ungage, Certified Nursing Officer from Gumine.

Their message was simple but powerful: these lights would help them provide safer care after dark and save lives when it matters most.

Thank you to SolarBuddy for making this possible and to Charles Bilgan for ensuring these life-changing resources reached the frontline healthcare workers who need them most.
