The Australian Ceramics Association and Manly Art Gallery & Museum are calling for submissions to exhibit in Absence / Presence, an exhibition of selected small works to be shown at MAG&M in 2027.
https://australianceramics.com/exhibitions/absence-presence

The exhibition Absence / Presence will reflect on the theme of memory and the ways in which ceramics uniquely embody this. Clay can be a holder of memory; it carries deep geological time, and sensitively records touch and impression. Absence and trace can resonate in the material as powerfully as substance and form.

The exhibition will feature 80 small works no more than 15cm deep and wide, and no more than 30cm high. Members of The Australian Ceramics Association (TACA) are invited to respond to this theme with their ceramic work.

Absence / Presence will show alongside our major curated exhibition, Bodies of Evidence: Experimentation in Contemporary Australian Ceramics from 16 April – 30 May 2027.

Submissions close Monday 28 September 2026.

A record-breaking number of TACA members submitted proposals to Bodies of Evidence, creating a challenging assessment task for Guest Curator Bridie Moran.

Bridie said: “It was a delightfully difficult task to consider the 118 applications submitted from Australian ceramic practitioners exploring scientific questions. It was a highly competitive field, with a high level of artistic innovation, thoughtful experimentation, and engagement with the intersections of ceramics, science, technology, ecology, material research, and cultural enquiry. I would like to thank the many practitioners who shared their experimentation, ideas and queries for this callout so ambitiously. We look forward to seeing all these experiments continue, and to sharing exhibition outcomes in 2027 at Manly Art Gallery & Museum.”

TACA is working hard to create more exhibition opportunities for our members, with new opportunities coming soon. Keep a lookout, keep in touch, and keep going. Your work is so valuable.

Bodies of Evidence: Experimentation in Contemporary Australian Ceramics is a major exhibition by Manly Art Gallery & Museum and The Australian Ceramics Association. These large scale selective members' exhibitions are held only every 3 years. The aim is to create an opportunity for ambitious new work to be developed and showcased, expressive of the current moment in contemporary ceramics.

Repost Mumirimina land, Iutruwita TAS

This new work “Extinction Series” explores a Tasmanian Thylacine motiff combining both printmaking and ceramic techniques. It is definitely a darker exploration of new ways of pattern making and historical explorations of Tasmania.
