The Wilderness Society South Australia

The Wilderness Society South Australia email [email protected] to get involved! South Australia is a land of spectacle. It's a place of wonders and an environment worth fighting for.

You can see a million birds fishing in the middle of a desert, when Lake Eyre floods. You can watch dozens of whales, swimming and breeding beneath limestone cliffs at the edge of the world's largest karst landscape filled with unexplored caves, as you stand on the edge between the Great Australian Bight and the Nullarbor. South Australia contains vast areas of wilderness and has some of the highe

st quality arid and marine wilderness anywhere. Sharing borders with all mainland states, SA is crucial to any vision of continent wide conservation. Some of our campaigns run across many of these categories.

🌿✨ On Sunday 19 April, TWS SA proudly hosted a 50th anniversary celebration of The Wilderness Society in the beautiful Adelaide Botanic Garden 🥳

It was a fantastic afternoon/evening reflecting on five decades of protecting wild places. Guests explored displays of historic photos and campaign archives, and heard inspiring talks highlighting major SA campaign wins over the past 40 years.

The atmosphere was warm, energising, and full of hope. Many left feeling inspired by stories of campaigns that once seemed impossible, but ultimately led to lasting wilderness protection 💚

Stay tuned as we're working on how we can spread these messages of hope with the wider community.✨🌿

We’re not saying our exhibition is like a scene from "Night at the Museum"… but let’s just say a couple of our feathered friends have gotten a little too realistic - and may have left some “evidence” behind 💩

'together for wilderness' exhibition is staying (mostly) still and ready for you to explore! It’s the perfect adventure these school holidays. No magic tablet required.

Bring the family, spark a little imagination, and see if you can spot which animal might be the first to sneak out of the frame…

📍 On now in the Adelaide Botanic Garden's Wisteria Arbours (both)

For more than 20 years, Pete Owen has been a powerful voice for the Wilderness Society.

Our Director in South Australia, Pete has helped secure landmark state and federal reforms, build community momentum to push big oil companies out of the Great Australian Bight, and played a lead role in the protection of vast land and sea wilderness across South Australia.

Reflecting on the importance of people power, Pete told Fleurieu Living: "I think a lot of people don’t realise that protection doesn’t happen unless the community demands it. A major part of our work is empowering people to speak for the environment. It’s critical and it needs to happen now more than ever."

We're proud to share that Pete and his work at the Wilderness Society have been featured in the newest issue of Fleurieu Living Magazine. You can find copies across the Fleurieu Peninsula and Adelaide, in local cafes, restaurants, wineries, B&Bs, and newsagents.

Coinciding with the feature is the Together for Wilderness exhibition, now showing at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. This free photographic exhibition celebrates South Australia’s remarkable wild places—and the communities who have come together to protect them.

Many of the campaigns Pete has helped lead are brought to life through the exhibition, alongside breathtaking images of the Nullarbor, Goyder Lagoon, and the iconic seascapes of the Great Australian Bight.
