Grandcarers SA Grandcarers SA supports Grandcarers to improve the welfare of the children in their care. We work for carers and children!

Established in 2002 and formerly known as Grandparents For Grandchildren SA (GFGSA), we believe that all children and young people have the right to a safe, secure and nurturing family environment where the role of Grandcarer (grandparent and kinship carers of their family’s children) is recognised, supported and valued. To achieve this, we assist Grandcarers to access and care for their children by providing them with information, support and advocacy, including:

Practical advice and referrals
Financial assistance through our Education and Development Fund
Mobile Outreach and Village Support Program
Sector advocacy
Telephone support service

Our Vision:
All Grandcarers are empowered to provide a safe, secure and nurturing family environment where all children in their care can thrive. Our Purpose:
To provide comprehensive support to Grandcarers through financial assistance, personal support, information provision, and advocacy. We aim to empower Grandcarers to achieve positive outcomes for themselves and the children in their care. Definition of Grandcarer:
Grandcarers are full time carers of, or alienated from, their kin’s children. Grandcarers SA primarily supports grandparents but also supports other full time informal kinship carers.

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of John Gardner GAICD as our new Board Chairperson, and the introduction of two new Board Members, Assistant Commissioner of Police Philip Newitt, and Solicitor Kurt Schenk.
On Wednesday 14 October the Board unanimously voted for John Gardner as the Chairperson of the Board of Grandcarers SA (Grandparents for Grandchildren SA Inc).
John succeeds former Chairperson Kathryn House AM who stood down from the role after a very successful incumbency, and remains on the Board in the informal role of Immediate Past Chairperson.
John is a well-known and respected former politician whose roles included Minister for Education, Deputy Leader of the Opposition and a wide range of Shadow Ministerial portfolios. He brings the board a deep understanding of government processes, experience in delivering reform and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).
We are also pleased to announce two new Board Members, Assistant Commissioner of Police Philip Newitt and Solicitor Kurt Schenk.
Philip is a career police officer with SA Police, the last 11 years in the rank of Assistant Commissioner. He has created first class standards of operational and strategic leadership across diverse portfolios, driving organisational change and mitigating risk through the application of best practice.
Kurt is currently a Solicitor in the Crown Solicitor’s Office with experience across public service and the not for profict sector as a community advocate and campaigner. He has a strong interest in public service, social justice and the role of law and public policy in improving the lives of vulnerable members of the community.
We also want to express our thanks to Sandra Egege, who has completed two terms on the Board, and in recent years magnificently performed the role of Secretary.

National Carers Week? Is it really??
At Grandcarers SA we get conflicted at times like this.
We really do appreciate the commitment of carers across the land, but…
we also know tens of thousands of informal kinship carers remain invisible to governments, government agencies and some non-government agencies.
We hope our carers realise they are important too. Thank you to each and every one of them, you deserve to be celebrated 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

MAKING THE CASE FOR INFORMAL KINSHIP CARERS

Grandcarers SA has been invited to make a submission to the South Australian Parliament’s Social Development Committee Inquiry into financial assistance for formal and informal foster and kinship carers.

It is an important opportunity to put the needs of Grandcarers directly before decision-makers.

Our submission highlights the inequity faced by informal grandparent and kinship carers, who provide the same day-to-day care for children as formal carers, but can miss out on the financial assistance and practical supports available to those formal carers.

We are calling for Informal Kinship Care Allowances and, most importantly, eligibility based on who is actually caring for the child and the child’s needs, not whether DCP is involved.
