The Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation is dedicated to enriching children's lives through research.

Firefly Children’s Foundation is a South Australian foundation funding pioneering research and programs that help children grow, glow and thrive, across health, education and welfare, from preconception to beyond early childhood. Established in 1976 with proceeds from community giving, our Foundation today is at the forefront of supporting innovative research into children’s health, education and welfare. Our fundraising helps advance the work of South Australia’s world-class research and service organisations as they strive to initiate new concepts, build knowledge, target breakthroughs and accomplish outcomes to improve a child’s quality of life. We’re also passionate about fostering research talent and career opportunities in South Australia. That’s why our grant program is dedicated to state-led research, including career research where subsidy is rare. The Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation has an established and proud association with Channel 7 Adelaide and some of the nation’s leading research and service organisations - Flinders University, Novita Children’s Services, The University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and the Women’s and Children’s Health Network - that together forms its Board and independent Research Committee.

The wait is almost over! Tomorrow night we reveal our 2027 grant recipients - the Firefly Class of 2027.

Our Annual Grant Awards bring together researchers, supporters and our community to celebrate the ideas helping create brighter futures for children.

We're proud to present this year's event alongside our Event Partner, Ord Minnett, whose support helps recognise South Australian innovation and discovery.

This year, our first grants round as Firefly Children's Foundation will see grants awarded to South Australian projects across health, education and welfare.

Hear from our Marketing Manager Ali on what has been happening at Firefly this October.

It’s been another busy and rewarding month with our Annual Research Grants now selected for 2027. With over 100 applications from SA researchers, we’re excited to share with you our Firefly Class of 2027 early next month, and the projects that will deliver the best outcomes for kids.
We also heard from our 7NEWS Adelaide Firefly Champions, Will Goodings and Rosanna Mangiarelli, about why they back Firefly. For Will, the literacy programs resonate as a dad. For Rosanna, it’s because all children deserve a level playing field.

Every healthy start has a story behind it.

The knowledge that guides pregnancy, birth and newborn care today has been built over decades of discovery. Researchers asking questions. Families participating in studies. Communities investing in better outcomes for the next generation.

Over the past 50 years, Maternal, Fetal and Perinatal Health has been Firefly's largest area of strategic funding, with more than $6.4 million invested in South Australian-led pioneering research. This sits within a broader commitment to advancing knowledge across childhood, including Infectious Disease, Immunology and Vaccination ($6.0 million) and Genetic and Rare Disorders ($4.8 million), helping drive discoveries that support children from before birth through to adolescence.

Alongside these areas, Firefly has invested in breakthroughs across childhood cancer, mental health, nutrition, learning, child protection and more.

Because every discovery has the potential to improve a child's journey from before birth, through childhood and beyond.

This Medical Research Week, we're celebrating the South Australian researchers helping children grow, glow and thrive.

It's ASMR Medical Research Week® and Firefly is proud to be a Silver Sponsor in South Australia. This week is about celebrating the health and medical researchers working to give every child a brighter future.

Since 1976, the generosity of South Australians has helped fuel children's research right here at home.

More than 950 research grants - Over $36 million invested, equivalent to more than $55 million today - More than 450 lead researchers supported - 19 areas of children’s health.

Every grant began with a question about how children can thrive. This Medical Research Week, we're celebrating the researchers pursuing those answers.

Hearing loss is one of the most common sensory disorders in children, affecting around 3–4 in every 1,000 children from birth.

For children living with single-sided deafness, busy classrooms, group conversations and noisy playgrounds can make listening and learning more challenging. While hearing devices can help, many adolescents choose not to wear them, creating a gap between available technology and real-world outcomes.

With funding support from Firefly Children's Foundation, Professor Mridula Sharma and her team at Flinders University are working with young people to better understand the barriers to hearing device use and co-design practical solutions that improve support across health, education and welfare.

For children like Liam, this pioneering research is helping create more opportunities to connect, learn and thrive.

This is the lasting impact of our support. Turning flickers of discovery into real-world solutions.

Meet Associate Professor Zohra Lassi from Firefly's Research Committee!

Zohra helps review and select the research proposals Firefly supports, with a focus on projects that are practical, equitable and capable of improving outcomes for children and families.

She believes research is most valuable when it helps us understand what truly works, identifies gaps in support, and ensures every child has the opportunity to thrive.
