Veteran Zimbabwean journalist, Loughty Dube, has been elected the inaugural Chairperson of the newly formed Southern African Press Councils (SAPC), following its official launch in Lusaka, Zambia, yesterday.

The election took place during the association’s inaugural meeting, which brought together press councils and media self-regulatory bodies from across Southern Africa. The gathering marked a major step toward strengthening regional collaboration on media accountability, ethical journalism, and press freedom.

Dube will be deputised by Dr. Phathiswa Magopeni, Executive Director of the Press Council of South Africa, and Mbongeni Mbingo from Eswatini, forming the first leadership team tasked with operationalising the new regional body.

Statement on the Election of Loughty Dube as Chairperson of the Southern African Press Councils Association

The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe) is pleased to inform its members, stakeholders, and partners that its Executive Director, Loughty Dube, has been elected the inaugural Chairperson of the Southern African Press Councils.

The election took place during the official launch and inaugural meeting of SAPC held in Lusaka on 18 March 2026. This landmark development marks a significant milestone not only for VMCZ but also for Zimbabwe’s media sector, as it assumes a leadership role in shaping regional media self-regulation.

SAPC brings together press councils and media self-regulatory bodies from across Southern Africa with a shared commitment to promoting ethical journalism, strengthening accountability, and advancing press freedom. Its establishment follows the adoption of the Zambia Declaration, which sets out the vision and operational framework of the association.

As VMCZ, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Dube on this well-deserved achievement. His election is a testament to his extensive experience, leadership in media development, and unwavering commitment to ethical journalism and self-regulation.

We are confident that under his stewardship, SAPC will play a pivotal role in strengthening collaboration among member institutions, enhancing professional standards, and addressing emerging challenges such as misinformation, declining public trust, and threats to media freedom.

This development also reflects positively on Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to promote media reforms and co-regulation, in which self-regulation plays a central role alongside statutory mechanisms.

VMCZ remains committed to supporting Mr. Dube in his new role and to contributing actively to the success of SAPC.

We encourage our members and partners to take pride in this achievement and to continue upholding the principles of ethical and responsible journalism.
