Statement from the Board Chairperson of the African Union for Persons with Albinism (AUPA)
16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence
2025 Theme: "UNITE TO END DIGITAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS. "

As we enter the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the African Union for Persons with Albinism (AUPA) stands in firm solidarity with women and girls across our continent especially those with Albinism who continue to face unique and often invisible forms of harm in digital spaces.

The rise of online platforms has brought tremendous opportunities for connection, empowerment, and advocacy. Yet, for many women and girls, it has also opened a new battlefield of abuse. For persons with albinism, this digital violence is often fueled by misinformation, prejudice, and the harmful myths that continue to stain our progress as a continent. Online harassment, cyberstalking, image-based abuse, hate speech, and threats are not just “internet problems”—they are real forms of violence with real consequences.

We cannot afford to be silent.

Today, I call upon African governments, technology regulators, civil society, the private sector, and every community leader to rise with urgency and purpose. We need stronger policies that protect vulnerable users, faster reporting systems, and platforms that act responsibly when abuse occurs. Digital rights must go hand in hand with digital safety.

I further appeal to African Heads of State to champion this cause at the highest level. Let us build a continent where technology strengthens dignity not fear. We must invest in public education programs that fight stigma, strengthen media literacy, and empower women and girls with albinism to use digital spaces safely and confidently.

Ending digital violence is not an act of charity it is an act of justice.

As AUPA, we reaffirm our commitment to standing with every woman and girl with albinism who refuses to be silenced or diminished. Their voices matter. Their safety matters. Their dignity is non-negotiable.

Let this year’s theme be more than a slogan. Let it be a call to action across Africa. Together, we can build a safer and more inclusive digital future for all.

From 25 November to 10 December 2025, mark the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-based Violence under the theme: “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls”.

Violence against women and girls affects one in three women. It is a global human rights emergency that must stop. As the world marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – one of the most progressive international agreements on women’s rights to date – the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE 2025 campaign focuses on one of the fastest-growing forms of abuse: digital violence against women and girls. This year’s campaign is also a reminder that digital safety is central to gender equality.

Online harassment of people with albinism particularly women and girls involves bullying, hate speech, and the spread of harmful myths through digital platforms, stemming from the same societal discrimination and stigma they face offline. This online abuse, which can include threats and the spread of dangerous beliefs about magical powers, has a severe impact on the mental health of individuals and is a violation of their human rights. African Union For Persons With Albinism is working to address this by promoting awareness to make sure that digital platforms are a safer place for persons with albinism . Let's all work hard to see positive stories of the Albinism community across social media platforms .
