✨ Strengthening Collective Action to End Child Marriages in Zimbabwe ✨

The Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) was honoured to be part of the validation workshop for the review of the National Action Plan and Communication Strategy on Ending Child Marriages and Harmful Practices (2019–2021) convened by the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development.

This important space brought together government stakeholders, civil society organisations, development partners and communities to reflect on progress made, challenges encountered, lessons learned, and the way forward in strengthening efforts to end child marriages in Zimbabwe.

As WCoZ, we continue to advocate for strong, coordinated and gender-responsive policies that protect the rights of girls, uphold their dignity, and ensure that every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow and realise her full potential.

We remain committed to amplifying the voices of women and girls, strengthening accountability, and contributing to collective solutions that address harmful practices and advance gender equality.

Still unpacking the 2026 State of Women Report: Tracking the direction of travel for women’s rights in Zimbabwe 🇿🇼

As part of the evidence presented in the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) State of Women Report 2026, the Tracking 2025: What Has Changed? tracker highlights important areas where progress remains limited, where gains are at risk, and where urgent action is needed.

The findings reveal that while some policy and legislative commitments exist, the lived realities of many women continue to reflect persistent inequalities:

📌 Women’s political participation remains stagnant
Women continue to hold 34% of seats in Parliament and 14% of local government positions, with no elections held during the reporting period to shift representation. The question remains: how do we move from commitments to meaningful representation and decision-making power?

📌 Economic empowerment remains constrained
Only 15% of women entrepreneurs access formal credit, with evidence suggesting that barriers such as limited access to finance, collateral requirements and structural inequalities remain unchanged.

📌 Gender-based violence services are under pressure
The GBV service caseload tracked through the MUSASA platform declined from approximately 40,000 survivors served in 2024 to 27,000–28,000 in 2025. However, this decline is attributed to reduced service capacity due to funding constraints — not a reduction in the prevalence of violence.

📌 Social protection gaps are widening
Household access to social safety nets declined from 74% to 48% (2023–2024), with funding disruptions placing additional strain on vulnerable households.

📌 Girls’ education remains affected by structural barriers
Financial hardship, school costs, early marriage and pregnancy continue to constrain girls’ ability to complete upper secondary education.

📌 Women’s participation in international markets remains limited
Women-owned MSMEs continue to face barriers to exporting, including limited access to export finance, standards compliance costs and restricted market opportunities.

The tracker reminds us that progress cannot only be measured by policies on paper — it must be measured by whether women and girls experience real improvements in their everyday lives.

The State of Women Report 2026 continues to provide critical evidence for advocacy, accountability and collective action towards a Zimbabwe where gender equality is realised for all women and girls.

We’re sitting in this space with gratitude. 💛

Day 1 of reminded us why we do this work. The voices were clear — The message: Africa has the laws. Our women and girls deserve the protection.

WCoZ is excited to be part of these conversations on SRHR, colonial legacies, and what African legal identity must look like when it centers dignity and bodily autonomy.

As we move to Day 2: Reclaiming the Terrain, we carry the stories of the women we serve in Zimbabwe. This is for them.

Let’s keep talking. Let’s keep acting.

The 2026 State of Women’s Rights Assessment is a sobering reminder: progress is possible, but it is not automatic.

From persistent gender inequalities and GBV to digital and climate inequalities, economic hardship and barriers to justice, the findings show where women’s rights continue to face systemic barriers.

But the report also points to a way forward: stronger accountability, gender-responsive budgeting, women’s leadership, GBV prevention, access to justice, intersectional policymaking and better data.

The question is no longer whether we know what needs to change. It is whether we will act.

🌸 BRIDGING GENERATIONS | EMPOWERING YOUNG WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES TO LEAD

Today, the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) is convening an Intergenerational Mentorship Dialogue for Young Women with Disabilities under the theme:

“Bridging Generations: Empowering Young Women with Disabilities to Lead, Influence and Thrive.”

The dialogue creates an important space for young women with disabilities to connect with experienced women leaders, share experiences, build confidence and strengthen pathways for meaningful participation in leadership and decision-making spaces.

The programme features a powerful leadership journey from Commissioner Irene Sithole, a session on overcoming barriers and building leadership confidence, and discussions on constitutional provisions supporting young women’s participation in decision-making and leadership.

The dialogue will also create opportunities for mentor–mentee networking, relationship building and the development of personal leadership action plans and commitments.

At WCoZ, we believe that leadership must be inclusive, intergenerational and accessible. Young women with disabilities are not simply leaders of tomorrow , they are leaders today, and their voices, experiences and aspirations must shape the decisions that affect their lives and communities.
