On Monday, the Mubatirapamwe team had an insightful discussion on Capitalk FM 100.4 FM with host Folake on the growing concern of va**ng among young people.

During the interview, Tendai highlighted that, unlike traditional ci******es and to***co, va**ng has not yet received the same level of attention at policy and law enforcement levels, despite its increasing use among youth.

When asked what schools can do to help children understand that va**ng is not as harmless as it may seem, Tendai emphasized that psychoeducation, counseling, and early prevention programs are essential in raising awareness about the health risks of va**ng and equipping young people with accurate information and healthy coping skills.

What other steps do you think schools, parents, and communities can take to protect children from va**ng?

On Monday, Tendai and Edney from Mubatirapamwe had an insightful discussion on va**ng and its impact on health, live on Capitlk FM. During the session, Tendai unpacked how v**e devices work and highlighted the harmful chemicals they contain.

He emphasized that va**ng products often contain ni****ne, a highly addictive substance that can lead to dependency. In addition, he shed light on the presence of toxic heavy metals such as lead, which pose serious health risks. The discussion also focused on diacetyl, a chemical linked to severe lung damage, which can contribute to EVALI (Electronic and/ or Vaping-Associated Lung Injury).

This discussion served as an important reminder of the hidden dangers of va**ng and the need for increased awareness, especially among young people. Did you know that va**ng can be just as harmful as smoking ci******es?

Today the Mubatirapamwe team had an engaging live session with host Folake on Capitalk 100.4FM, unpacking the realities of va**ng. The discussion highlighted how va**ng is often seen as more fashionable and “safer” than smoking, especially among young people, yet the risks are frequently underestimated. They also explored why many individuals turn to va**ng as a way to cope with stress, raising important questions about healthier alternatives and awareness.

This conversation is a reminder that trends don’t always equal safety, and what looks “cool” can still carry serious health consequences.

Do you think va**ng is truly less harmful than smoking, or has it just been marketed in a way that makes it seem safer? What are your thoughts?

The Mubatirapamwe team successfully conducted a 2-day training program on mental health, drug and substance use for young people from SOS Children ‘s Villages-Bindura.

Day 1 focused on mental health awareness, equipping participants with knowledge, practical strategies, and essential skills to promote well-being and manage everyday stressors. Through interactive discussions and shared experiences, the participants developed a deeper understanding of self-awareness, emotional balance, and the importance of seeking psychosocial support. Emphasis was also placed on adopting healthy coping mechanisms to prevent challenges from escalating into mental health concerns.

Building on this foundation, Day 2 shifted focus to drug and substance use education. Participants were taught about commonly used drugs, their effects, root causes of use, and the risks associated with substance abuse. Through detailed explanations and educational videos, participants gained valuable insight into how drug and substance use impacts individuals and communities. The session also created space for open engagement, allowing participants to ask questions and gain clarity.

Together, the two days created a holistic platform for learning, reflection, and empowerment, encouraging informed choices, resilience, and healthier lifestyles.

Yesterday, Mubatirapamwe team alongside Mandla Machakaire from International Wellness joined the Detox show on 100.4 FM, hosted by Folake, to unpack the growing concern of drug and substance smuggling in both boarding and day schools.

Mandla courageously shared his personal story, revealing how he was first introduced to alcohol at just 13 years old through family exposure. He reflected on how learners disguised alcohol in juice bottles to avoid suspicion, making it easier to consume on school grounds away from teachers and seniors. The discussion also highlighted how substances such as ma*****na continue to find their way into schools, exposing the harsh reality of accessibility among young people.

This conversation sheds light on the urgent need for awareness, prevention, and open dialogue around substance use in schools. Protecting young lives starts with honest conversations and collective responsibility.

What do you think is the most urgent priority: awareness, counseling, or community education? Why?
