The AmalgamatedRural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe is a rural teacher organization founded in 2009 and launched officially in Harare on the 12th of March 2013. The launch of the ARTUZ set the tone for the fight for the improvement of both the working conditions of the rural teachers and the livelihoods of citizens living in the rural areas. The idea to form the rural teachers union was mooted in 2009 when the government of Zimbabwe introduced the incentive scheme in which teachers were to get 10% of levy paid by pupils. The incentive scheme benefited already privileged urban teachers. The rural teachers went on to meet in Gweru in August 2009 where the teachers unanimously resolved that the rural teacher had peculiar challenges that can best be represented by an autonomous, issues based specific union to amplify the voice of the rural teacher in the pressing of their demands to the government . The Gweru meeting noted that the rural teacher is a growth point in rural communities and as such, their insurmountable contributions they make in strengthening development of their communities and the country at large should be recognized. The A.R.T.U.Z has currently a membership of 4534 fully subscribed members, 2800 non-subscribing members and 233 associate members countrywide. The Union operates and had structures in eight (8) administrative provinces in Zimbabwe (excluding Harare and Bulawayo metropolitans)

In Mashonaland Central our rep Commander Munemo and his team were blocked from delivering our World Teachers Day message. The commemorations were organised by Education Coalition of Zimbabwe - ecozi ARTUZ is a paid up member of Ecozi and has been active in preparing for the day.

The ECOZI leadership snubbed our calls seeking clarity on the matter.

We suspect the ban was imposed to prevent the recurrence of what happened last year at World Teachers Day. The ARTUZ rep stole the show after speaking truth to power. Teachers loved it, parents celebrated and learners were inspired but the Minister felt humiliated.

We have no regrets! This is a fighting Union and will never aspire to be accommodated. We fight on!

We salute the Mash Central leadership for standing tall in the face of all the harassment and humiliation they endured.

The Union leadership descended in full force at Mavhudzi High School to represent the ARTUZ Makoni District Chair. The Chair who is an acting Head at a school in the district was charged with an exam malpractice related charge. Chair Sigangeni had a watertight defense. ARTUZ members are exemplary on issues of delivering credible quality education. The Union is confident that she will be cleared of the charges. Red salute to President Masaraure Obert SG Munyaradzi Masiyiwa Welfare officer Ronald Hondongwa, Union lawyer Samson Dzingira and Union Alliance building Officer Emmanuel Sitima. Today we honored an invitation to Bakwa Primary School in Hurungwe.The school had invited President Masaraure Obert as guest. Union deployed PC Longina Rufu who eloquently articulated the Union’s commitment to access to education. The Union will be paying 2027 Grade 7 fees for the outstanding Grade 6 learner of 2026. Government should fully fund basic education in line with section 75 of the constitution of Zimbabwe.

The Union is outraged to learn that a school head at Bubude primary school, Tsholotsho, one Cresencia Ncube mobilized community members to physically assault a fellow teacher. Our colleague Cde Clara, (picture below), endured a traumatic experience at the hands of the hired mob. The incident which occurred on the 1st of October violated Ubuntu values, labour rights and decency. Sick characters like Ncube, should be flushed out of our Public Service.

Today our Cde successfully filed a police report and we will be following this case closely.

ARTUZ SOLIDARITY UPDATE | STANDING WITH OUR MEMBERS IN TIMES OF LOSS

The ARTUZ family continues to stand together in moments of grief and loss.

Today, members of the ARTUZ National Leadership are standing in solidarity with two of our members who have lost their loved ones.

Yesterday, Cde Mabasa led a delegation to stand with Cde Zimhete and his family during the burial of his father. The delegation conveyed the Union’s condolences, solidarity and support to the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, the Vice President is leading a delegation attending the funeral of Cde Mzondo’s mother. The ARTUZ delegation is accompanying the family as they travel to Zaka for her burial.

We extend our deepest condolences to both families. In moments such as these, we are reminded that ARTUZ is more than a union — but a family that stands together in both struggle and sorrow.

To Cdes Zimhete and Mzondo, you are not alone. We mourn with you, we stand with you and we remain with you.

An injury to one is an injury to all.
