Yesterday, May 22, Lutheran Development Services (LDS), in partnership with AGRITEX, successfully hosted an impactful Field Day in Ward 9 (Masivamele–Tananimutavona CLDC). Under the theme "Celebrating Diversity in Farming – A Key to Sustainable Livelihoods," the event brought together local farmers, community leaders, government departments, and private sector partners to promote climate-smart agriculture and strengthen rural resilience.
The event served as a practical showcase for building household food security, placing a major emphasis on climate-smart small grains like sorghum and millet as drought-tolerant champions. Farmers also explored the benefits of integrated farming systems, learning how to combine conservation agriculture, vegetable nutrition gardens, and fish farming to secure balanced family nutrition while creating multiple streams of income.
Beyond harvesting, the Field Day focused heavily on value addition, encouraging communities to process, package, and market their agricultural produce to minimize post-harvest losses and maximize profits. A major highlight of the day was the award ceremony, where outstanding local farmers won exciting prizes—including essential farming inputs, high-quality seeds, and implements—recognizing their exceptional hard work and innovation in sustainable farming.
This successful initiative was driven by the active participation and collaboration of key stakeholders, including the AGRITEX District Head Mr. Bodi and his team, the Ward 9 Chief, local councillors, and village heads, who all provided vital leadership. The event also featured strong representation from the Ministry of Women Affairs, the Youth Ministry, industry seed houses SeedCo and K2, and the Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA). Through powerful initiatives like this, LDS remains deeply committed to equipping households with the knowledge and tools needed to build a resilient and sustainable future for all. 🌾💚
