Today, Welthungerhilfe Zimbabwe joins the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the rest of the world in celebrating Sustainable Gastronomy Day.

Sustainable gastronomy is about more than food on our plates. It is about how food is grown, harvested, prepared, and consumed in ways that support healthy people, thriving communities, and a healthy planet.

Across Zimbabwe, we are proud to work with communities, the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development Zim, government departments, as well as partners like Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), UNICEF Zimbabwe and Bio Innovation Zimbabwe, to promote the production and consumption of nutritious indigenous and locally available foods. From small grains and traditional vegetables to diverse, climate-resilient crops, local food systems play a vital role in improving nutrition, strengthening livelihoods, and building resilience against hunger.

By valuing and embracing our local foods, we can preserve cultural heritage, support smallholder farmers, improve dietary diversity, and contribute to . Today, we celebrate the rich flavours, traditions, and nutritional benefits of Zimbabwean foods and continue building sustainable food systems for all.

Welthungerhilfe Zimbabwe joins the African Union and Africa in commemorating Africa Day. We celebrate the strength, resilience, diversity and unity of our beautiful continent. We also reaffirm our commitment to a future where every family has access to nutritious food, clean water, dignified sanitation, and sustainable livelihoods.

This year’s African Day theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” is a reminder that food security, nutrition, climate resilience, and WASH are deeply interconnected.

We continue to work in Zimbabwe with the same systems perspective. Partnering with the government, communities, local partners, and supporters to strengthen resilient food systems, improve access to safe water and sanitation, and advance the vision of a world without hunger.

to the launch of the 2025 Global Hunger Index in Harare a couple of months ago.

The event, held under the theme “20 Years of Tracking Hunger: Time to Recommit to Zero Hunger”, brought together key actors from across Zimbabwe’s food systems, including Government, development partners, the private sector, academia, civil society, and the media. We collectively reflected on the state of hunger and nutrition and discussed collective solutions for a food-secure future in Zimbabwe.

The event featured powerful conversations on climate resilience and food systems transformation, nutrition and child stunting, partnerships and policy coordination, and investments in agriculture, markets, and rural livelihoods

The discussions reinforced one important message: ending hunger requires coordinated action across all sectors of society.

Last week, the Welthungerhilfe team participated in the German Day commemorations hosted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Embassy Harare at the University of Zimbabwe’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities. We showcased our work towards sustainable food systems transformation and resilient livelihoods.
Visitors to our exhibition had an opportunity to engage with crops produced by farmer groups supported through our programmes and the food products made from Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs), manufactured and marketed by our partner Bio Innovation Zimbabwe. We had practical examples of community-driven innovation, value addition, and sustainable agriculture in Zimbabwe
