Today, Welthungerhilfe Zimbabwe joins the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the rest of the world in celebrating Sustainable Gastronomy Day.
Sustainable gastronomy is about more than food on our plates. It is about how food is grown, harvested, prepared, and consumed in ways that support healthy people, thriving communities, and a healthy planet.
Across Zimbabwe, we are proud to work with communities, the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development Zim, government departments, as well as partners like Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), UNICEF Zimbabwe and Bio Innovation Zimbabwe, to promote the production and consumption of nutritious indigenous and locally available foods. From small grains and traditional vegetables to diverse, climate-resilient crops, local food systems play a vital role in improving nutrition, strengthening livelihoods, and building resilience against hunger.
By valuing and embracing our local foods, we can preserve cultural heritage, support smallholder farmers, improve dietary diversity, and contribute to . Today, we celebrate the rich flavours, traditions, and nutritional benefits of Zimbabwean foods and continue building sustainable food systems for all.
