There is no headline when violence doesn’t happen.
No alert when a prison becomes safer.
No image when services actually reach people who would otherwise be cut off.

Yet this is where prevention truly happens.

In high-risk contexts like North West Nigeria and Ituri (DRC), UN Volunteers are working behind the scenes to keep systems functioning when everything is under pressure.

In Nigeria, Patrick Thuranira, UN Volunteer Security Specialist with UNICEF, works to ensure humanitarian teams can safely access communities. He manages risk so that vaccination campaigns, health services, and critical aid can still reach those who need them most.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jessica M’Bazoghe, UN Volunteer Human Rights Officer with UNJHRO, documents human rights violations and supports justice processes, turning field evidence into accountability and action.

“One of the most important parts of this work is to listen and document carefully. What we collect in the field is what allows action to follow.” — Jessica M’Bazoghe

Across both contexts, the mission is the same:
keep access open, keep services running, and hold the line before systems break.

Find a cause you care about, whether it is gender equality, education, climate change, health or youth empowerment and offer your time, skills or resources.

You don’t have to do something huge to make an impact.
Here are some small but very meaningful ways you can contribute to development:

1️⃣ Get involved in your local community. Volunteer at schools, clinics, food banks, sports clubs or environmental groups. Small, consistent actions make a lasting impact.

2️⃣ Share your story. Talk about your volunteer experience with friends, family or online to inspire and encourage others to start volunteering.

3️⃣ Support others to participate. Encourage and help people around you, especially those who may face barriers, to get involved in volunteer opportunities.

We talk a lot about "changing the world," but change doesn't happen in a boardroom, it happens on the ground, in our neighborhoods, and through our shared time. Volunteerism is the heartbeat of a resilient society.
