As we continue reflecting on the International Day of Peace, we look back at a powerful moment from the December 2024 launch of the National Youth Council for Peace and Development at Holiday Inn.

In this archival clip, Father Fidelis Mukonori, Guest of Honour, reflects on his role as a Peace Ambassador and the responsibility of promoting peace.

His reflections speak to the heart of 4-H Zimbabwe’s peace programming: creating spaces for dialogue, youth participation, understanding, social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

Peace is not a once-off conversation. It is a continuous journey that requires all of us to play our part. 🕊️🤝🏾

Today, as we commemorate World Peace Day, we celebrate the journey of 4-H Zimbabwe Foundation in using youth participation, dialogue, sport and community engagement to contribute to peaceful and resilient communities.

Our work in peace programming has received recognition through several awards and acknowledgements:

🏆 African Union Award — recognising our outstanding contribution to advancing the Youth, Peace and Security Agenda in Africa | 12 April 2023.
🏆 International Peace and Sport Award - for effective use of sport to promote peace | 2022.
🏆 The Diplomatic Magazine & Diplomatic Trust Recognition — for outstanding contribution to peace and sustainable development | 6 December 2022.
🏆 NANGO Certificate of Award for Community Development | 2024.

These recognitions are more than awards. They reflect the collective efforts of young people, communities, partners and stakeholders who continue to believe that peace can be built through participation, dialogue, inclusion and positive action.

MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE WORK

John Muchenje | Founder & Executive Director, 4-H Zimbabwe

John Muchenje founded 4-H Zimbabwe with a vision of a Zimbabwe where young people, women and children meaningfully participate in shaping their communities and future.

Having grown up in Chirumhanzu, he saw the need to empower women and young people and support communities towards becoming peaceful, food-secure, healthy and drug-free.

As Founder and Executive Director, John coordinates the organisation's activities in line with its strategic direction to 2029, while facilitating initiatives that build community capacity and resilience — including trainings, solar-powered boreholes, gardens and community peace dialogues.

His work reflects a simple principle: empowered people can build stronger communities.

3 WAYS OF PROTECTING YOUR SOIL

1️⃣ Keep your soil covered
Use crop residues, mulch or ground cover to reduce erosion, protect moisture and shield the soil from harsh weather.

2️⃣ Add organic matter
Compost, manure and other organic materials can help improve soil structure and fertility.

3️⃣ Manage water wisely
Good water management helps reduce erosion, conserve moisture and support healthy crop growth.

PEOPLE & VOICES TUESDAY | WOMEN FARMERS LEADING CHANGE

From Farming to Financial Independence: Meet Mrs Edna Chizora

For Mrs Edna Chizora of Ward 24, farming has become more than a way of putting food on the table. It has opened new opportunities for her family and strengthened her ability to sustain her household economically.

Through increased agricultural production, Mrs Chizora and fellow women farmers started an income-generating project through women’s banking clubs, enabling them to support one another and purchase household goods.

But the impact went beyond income.

Through the 4-H Zimbabwe capacity-building programme, the women gained knowledge about the environmental consequences of deforestation, including its impact on rainfall patterns.

They turned that knowledge into action.

Through their income-generating project, they invested in environmentally friendly gas stoves, reducing their reliance on firewood while contributing to environmental conservation.

As Mrs Chizora puts it:

“As we harvested more crops from our agricultural activities, we started an income generating project through women’s banking clubs, which we used to buy household goods for each other.”

Her story is a powerful reminder that when women are equipped with knowledge, skills and opportunities, they can transform not only their livelihoods, but also the wellbeing of their families and the environment around them.

Climate action begins with informed and empowered communities.

Through its Sustainable Environmental Management and Climate Action initiatives, 4-H Zimbabwe Foundation is working with communities to promote environmental stewardship, climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods.

🌳 Encouraging tree planting and environmental conservation
🌾 Promoting climate-smart agricultural practices
💧 Supporting sustainable use of natural resources
🤝🏾 Building community awareness and participation in environmental action

Every tree planted, every climate-smart practice adopted and every community member empowered contributes to a greener, healthier and more resilient Zimbabwe.

The journey towards environmental sustainability is not the responsibility of a few—it requires all of us.
