Every child deserves safe, quality health care from the very beginning.

But far too many children worldwide are put at risk by unsafe care. Due to their rapid development, evolving health needs, and reliance on adults. Children are particularly vulnerable when health care is not designed for their unique requirements.

Even a single safety incident can have lifelong consequences for a child’s health and development.

Patient safety from the start -- is a reminder that begins with safe, child-centred care.

HIV remains taboo in many communities in Zimbabwe’s Bindura District where Tanya* lives.

As a result, she and her family hid her granddaughter’s HIV status from her. But not knowing her status, she often threw away her vital medication, making her vulnerable to opportunistic infections.

But all this changed when she and Tanya joined support groups for children with HIV and their caregivers, set up by Egmont Partner Friends for Child Development.

Today, she knows and understands her status and she and her family are managing the virus together.

“Our whole family have seen how my granddaughter has improved and the difference that the support groups have made. This has been so helpful. It led her father to get tested. He used to refuse. He learned that he is HIV + and has started taking medication. This is a good development. The stigma of denying and not being open has been eroded. Now the whole family understands and knows why they have to take the medication, why it is important for them to get a good diet. Now we manage their status together.” - Tanya.

Identifying opportunities together with the families, strengthening their capacities and following up are the basics of the FIRST project.
The mushroom project production training for 20 participants will improve the nutrition status of children while developing the economic capacity of caregivers from a very small space.
does not only save the environment (water, soil) but creates sustainability, gender equality and improves education outcomes.

Did you know: Most commercially grown mushroom does not require soil to grow?

Thank you Hlanganisa Community Fund - Lucinda , Mesadi and Reward and our peer Munguma for showing love, ubuntu and sisterhood during the burial of our MHARE Advisor and mentor Nothabo Sibanda.
She was a dedicated leader, an activist, a mother to her daughter and many girls . Her impact was beyond Bulawayo and was expanding to other parts of Zimbabwe and Africa.
It was a really sad moments but was also a celebration of a Comrade .

Rest in peace Nothabo .May God comfort the family , colleagues and the whole community.

This week FCD is part of the Learning visit in Kenya. The visit to *xWork was an eye opener on issues that are affecting children whose parents are s*x workers. This includes exposure to GBV, discrimination and stigma (as informed by research across Africa). Children are often abused and exploited because of vulnerability which requires strong Child and social protection.

This week we added 2 clinics and communities in Bindura District under our FIRST project. Thanks to the support from our funding partner The Egmont Trust. We continue to serve vulnerable children living within their families and communities. We work with them to achieve positive outcomes in health for all our targeted children. This year we will support families to be resilient and be able to support their children's needs while clinics provide quality health services. Yesterday we sensitized Rutope and Nyava clinic staff and community Leaders about the Families Integrating Resilience Sustaining Treatment in Children (FIRST) Project.
