Water can be beautiful, but it can also become deadly within seconds. Flooded rivers, dams, stormwater channels and unfamiliar swimming areas can turn into life-threatening situations without warning.

PLEASE DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE WATER.

👀 Keep children under constant supervision around water.
🚫 Never swim in unfamiliar or dangerous areas.
🌧️ Stay away from rivers and dams during heavy rain and flooding.

DROWNING INCIDENT & RECOVERY REPORT

Location: Steenkoolspruit River, Kriel, Mpumalanga

Responding Teams

- Mpumalanga Inland Water Police (MIWP)
- Delta 1 Rescue Diving

Incident Summary

A call was received from Kriel SAPS regarding a 19-year-old African male who had disappeared beneath the water while at the Steenkoolspruit River in the Kriel area.

The Mpumalanga Inland Water Police responded swiftly to the incident and requested assistance from Delta 1 Rescue Diving, as the particular section of the river is known to be extremely difficult to search and dive due to the presence of extensive and large rock formations.

Sgt Joubert entered the water and commenced the search operation with Sgt Mochayi while the Delta 1 Rescue Diving team was still en route to the scene.

Upon arrival of Delta 1 Rescue Diving, Sgt Joubert and Sgt Mochayi successfully located the body.

The Delta 1 Rescue Diving team subsequently assisted with the recovery of the body from the water, after which the recovery operation was concluded and the scene was handed over to the relevant authorities.

Outcome

The deceased was successfully located and recovered from the water through the combined efforts of Mpumalanga Inland Water Police and Delta 1 Rescue Diving. The circumstances around how and why the deceased entered the water is unknown. Investigation from Kriel SAPS is underway.

🚨 Five Things Families Should Avoid During an Active Search🚨

When someone goes missing in the water, every second feels unbearable. Families naturally want to do everything possible to bring their loved one home, and that comes from a place of love and desperation.
But during an active Search & Recovery operation, some actions, although well-intentioned, can make the situation more difficult.

Here are five things families should avoid during an active search:

1️⃣ Do not allow unverified individuals to take over the search
Social media can bring many offers of help. Some people may have good intentions, but not everyone has the training, experience, equipment, or understanding of professional search operations.
Always verify credentials, experience, and whether someone has the ability to work safely within an active operation.

2️⃣ Do not send independent divers or teams into an active search area without approval
Professional searches are coordinated for a reason. Law enforcement and Incident Command know what resources are needed, where teams should operate, and what areas have already been searched.
Unrequested teams entering the area can create safety concerns, confusion, and additional work for responders.

3️⃣ Do not rely on rumors and social media updates
During a tragedy, information spreads quickly—but not all information is accurate.
False information about search locations, sonar findings, underwater conditions, or possible outcomes can create unnecessary stress for families and interfere with the operation.
Always rely on official updates from law enforcement or the agencies managing the search.

4️⃣ Do not pressure responders based on online comments
Comments like "Why aren't they searching here?" or "Why aren't more divers in the water?" are common after water accidents.
The reality is that professional teams make decisions based on training, evidence, safety, and available resources—not on public pressure.

5️⃣ Do not forget your own safety and well-being
Families often focus completely on finding answers and may forget to eat, rest, or ask for support.
A search can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Accept help from trusted friends, family members, and support organizations.

❤️ The most important thing families can do is stay connected with the agencies leading the search, ask questions, and make decisions based on verified information.

DROWNING / RECOVERY INCIDENT REPORT

Location: Delmas, Mpumalanga

Incident Summary:

At approximately 07h30 on Friday, 17 July 2026, Delta 1 Rescue received a request to respond to a mining incident in the Delmas area after a dozer reportedly tumbled down a steep slope into a water-filled quarry with the operator still inside the machine.

Delta 1 Rescue was activated as members of the Mpumalanga Inland Water Police were committed to another operational incident in the Piet Retief area.

Upon arrival, the team established contact with the mine's management and emergency response personnel, including ER24 and the local Fire Department. A comprehensive scene assessment was conducted, and a coordinated recovery plan was developed by Delta 1 Rescue and the Fire Department, with valuable assistance from the mine's operations team.

Following the implementation of the recovery plan, the body of the operator was successfully recovered from the submerged dozer.

Current Status:

The deceased was handed over to the relevant authorities. A preliminary investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.

Delta 1 Rescue extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time.
