A massive thank you to all the learners from *Laerskool Onverwacht* for visiting Bethal SPCA today and bringing generous donations of food for our animals in care. Your kindness is already filling bowls and wagging tails!

The learners sat so intently while our Inspector taught them the principles of animal care and the 5 Freedoms. You listened, you asked questions, you cared. That’s how future animal heroes are made.

Then came the best part: each learner got a small container of blue paint and gave our entrance wall a fresh new makeover. You didn’t just bring food, you helped lay the foundation for a brighter, more welcoming image for our SPCA.

Thank you to the teachers too, for taking the time to bring your learners all the way from Kriel. Your effort and heart show in everything you do.

From full tummies to fresh paint, you made a real difference today 💙

🐾 Understanding the Difference: SPCA Duties vs Municipal By-law Enforcement 🏘️
Many people assume that every animal-related issue should be reported to the SPCA, but it's important to understand that the SPCA and Municipal By-law Enforcement have different roles and responsibilities.
The SPCA focuses on preventing animal cruelty, neglect, abuse, and ensuring animal welfare in terms of animal protection legislation. Their inspectors investigate cases where animals are suffering, injured, neglected, or being intentionally harmed.
Municipal By-law Enforcement, on the other hand, deals with issues governed by local municipal regulations. This may include matters such as: • Dogs roaming in public spaces • Excessive barking complaints • The number of animals permitted on a property • Licensing requirements • Stray animals in certain circumstances • Waste and nuisance complaints related to animals
Knowing who to contact helps ensure that complaints are directed to the correct authority, allowing issues to be resolved more efficiently and ensuring that both animal welfare and community standards are properly upheld.

Thanks to you, every single kennel and cattery at Bethal SPCA now has a heat lamp. That means no cold nights for the dogs and cats in our care — just warmth, comfort, and a safe place to sleep while they wait for their forever homes.

Winter hits hard, but your continuous support is what keeps them cozy when temperatures drop.

We’re still collecting large blankets to insulate the front of the kennels and hold that warmth in. If you have any to spare, we’d love them. Drop-offs welcome at the shelter 💙

With very cold temperatures and severe weather conditions expected this weekend, we urge everyone to take extra precautions to keep their animals safe, warm, and protected.

🐾 Bring pets indoors whenever possible.
🐾 Ensure outdoor animals have access to warm, dry, windproof shelter.
🐾 Provide extra bedding such as blankets, straw, or hay to help retain warmth.
🐾 Make sure fresh water is always available and check regularly to prevent it from freezing.
🐾 Increase food portions if appropriate, as animals use more energy to stay warm during cold weather.
🐾 Check on elderly, young, sick, or vulnerable animals more frequently.

No animal should be left exposed to harsh weather conditions. A little extra care can make a life-saving difference.

This is *Tiger*, a 3-year-old Jack Russell who’s feeling very lost right now.

His owner passed away recently, and Tiger is scared and confused. He’s not able to show his true, bouncy JRT temperament yet — he just needs time, patience, and someone to prove that he’s safe and wanted again.

Underneath the fear is a little soul who deserves love, stability, and a warm lap to curl up on. Jack Russells are smart, loyal, and full of heart. With the right family, Tiger will blossom.
