I had managed an informal ECD programme at our church for four years. We served about forty children from the community and I had built the whole operation from nothing. The Department of Social Development visited and told me the programme had real potential but that formalising it as a registered centre would require qualified staff and ideally a Level 5 qualification for the person leading it. That person was me. A colleague pointed me to Erudite Projects. I registered online, paid no registration fee, and started the ECD Level 5 course while continuing to run the programme. It took eleven months of disciplined evening study. I completed the course and submitted our application for formal registration as a centre. It was approved. I had worked as a relief teacher at a primary school for three years without a permanent contract. I loved the children and the school environment but teaching was not quite where I felt most useful. What I noticed was that the children who struggled most were not struggling with academic content. They were struggling with home situations, emotional instability, and a lack of consistent support. I had been working as a hairdresser for seven years. I enjoyed it and I was good at it but by the time I was thirty-two I knew it was not where I wanted to finish. I had always loved being around young children and had been doing hair for many of the mothers who brought their little ones along. Those children were always drawn to me. A client whose daughter attended a registered creche suggested I look at Erudite Projects. She said the way I interacted with her daughter during appointments told her I was in the wrong career. I registered with Erudite Projects on a Tuesday evening in November when I was twenty-nine years old, sitting on my bed in a small room I rented in Soweto. I had thirty-seven rands in my account and a phone with enough data to load the registration page. There was no registration fee, which was the only reason I could do it that night. I started the ECD Level 4 course the next morning. I studied on that phone, in that room, through load shedding and bad months and moments when I was not sure I would finish. I finished. I am now twenty-one months into a position at a registered ECD centre in Johannesburg with a salary I would not have believed possible on that Tuesday night in November. Everything can start from almost nothing. It just has to start.

I had no intention of ever working in healthcare. I was a seamstress with a small home tailoring business that I ran from my lounge. Then my neighbour had a stroke and her family asked if I would look in on her during the day while they were at work. I started visiting every morning and found that I was very good at it. Her family encouraged me to get a qualification so that I could be properly compensated for the level of care I was providing. I found Erudite Projects, registered online for the Caregiving course, paid no registration fee, and started studying. I kept my tailoring clients in the afternoons and studied in the mornings and evenings. I completed the course and now provide qualified home-based care to three families in my neighbourhood. The tailoring is still there. The caregiving is my calling.
