I worked in a correctional services facility for four years as administrative support. Every day I saw people cycling through the system without any real support on the outside. I believed with everything in me that better community-level intervention could prevent so much of what I witnessed. But I did not have the qualification to step into that role. A colleague who had studied through Erudite Projects recommended the Social Auxiliary Work course and said the online format was practical and manageable. I had worked for fifteen years as a domestic worker. The family I worked for was kind and I was comfortable but I was also standing still. When their children grew up and left home they no longer needed full-time help and I found myself at fifty-one with time on my hands and uncertainty ahead of me. My daughter suggested caregiving and found Erudite Projects for me online. She showed me the registration page and stayed with me while I signed up. There was no registration fee and we had me enrolled within twenty minutes. I studied slowly and carefully, often reading sections twice to make sure I understood. I was a teenage mother and I spent my twenties trying to make up for a start in life that had not gone according to plan. By the time I was twenty-six I had stabilised things at home but I still had nothing formal behind me. I had always loved working with children and spent time volunteering at an after-school programme in my area. The coordinator there mentioned Erudite Projects and the ECD Level 4 course. I had completed my ECD Level 4 through a different provider five years earlier. The qualification was solid but I had always felt that Level 5 was the version of myself I was working toward. The challenge was finding a programme I could complete without disrupting the centre I managed. Traditional study options required too much time away and too much disruption. When a colleague mentioned that Erudite Projects offered the Level 5 fully online with no registration fee, I registered that same evening. Studying online while managing a centre of thirty children and six staff members required careful planning but the self-paced format made it workable. I spent eight years as a cashier at a supermarket. I was reliable, I knew my job, and I was respected by my colleagues. But every year felt the same as the last and I had stopped looking forward to Mondays. A friend who worked at a care home kept telling me I had the right temperament for caregiving and that I should look into getting qualified.
