I grew up in a home affected by substance abuse and I know first-hand how much damage it does to a family. For a long time I carried that experience as a wound. Then I started to see it as a reason. I opened my own small crèche from my home three years ago. Parents trusted me, children thrived, and the community supported what I was doing. But without a formal Level 5 qualification, I could not apply for a government subsidy that would have transformed my little centre. I was retrenched at thirty-seven and it shook me completely. I had worked in logistics for over a decade and suddenly none of it seemed relevant. In our culture, caring for the elderly is something families do quietly and without recognition. I had been caring for my in-laws for years and nobody ever considered it work.
