One Little Life, One Big Transition πŸ’•

Today, as we look around our nursery, we are reminded of just how much this season has changed.

The little one in this video is the last baby currently in our care at El-Shammah Home. For many years, our home has been a place of safety, love, healing, and hope for abandoned and vulnerable babies. Every crib, every bottle, every bedtime story has been part of a journey that has touched countless lives.

As our current registration certificate for babies reaches its expiry, we find ourselves standing at the beginning of a new chapter.

Soon, we will be welcoming girls aged 5–7 years into our Place of Safety, creating a nurturing environment where they can heal, grow, learn, and thrive.

At the same time, we are excited to share that we are in the process of finalizing the registration of our Little Girls Enrichment & Tutor Centre. This initiative will allow us to provide quality educational support right here at El-Shammah Home, ensuring that every girl in our care receives the academic foundation, encouragement, and individual attention she deserves.

While it is bittersweet to say goodbye to this era of caring for babies, we know that our mission remains the same:

❀️ To protect vulnerable children.
❀️ To provide a safe place to belong.
❀️ To help every child discover their worth and potential.

Thank you to every donor, volunteer, supporter, social worker, staff member, and friend who has walked this journey with us. The faces may change, but the heart of El-Shammah Home remains unchanged.

Please keep us in your prayers as we prepare our facilities, complete registrations, and get ready to welcome our new little girls home.

A new chapter is beginning... and we cannot wait to share it with you.

Mother,
I do not know your voice,
or if you ever held me close enough
to count my tiny fingers.

I do not know
if you cried when you left,
or if the world was simply too heavy
for your tired heart to carry me too.

But today, on Mother’s Day,
while other children run into open arms,
I sit quietly with questions
only heaven seems to hear.

Did you whisper my name once?
Did you kiss my forehead goodbye?
Did you look back
after walking away?

Sometimes I pretend
the wind is you.
That every soft blanket,
every gentle hand,
every lullaby in the night
is love you wished you could give.

I used to think abandonment
meant I was unwanted.
But maybe broken people
sometimes make broken choices.
Maybe your leaving
was never proof
that I was unworthy of love.

Because love still found me.

It found me
in the caregiver who stayed awake
when I was sick.
In the arms that rocked me to sleep.
In strangers who became family.
In God,
who saw me long before the world did.

So today, Mother,
wherever you are,
I pray peace over your heart.
And though there is an ache
where your presence should have been,
I will not let bitterness grow there.

Because I am more
than the story of being left behind.

I am still worthy.
Still chosen.
Still deeply loved.

Tonight the world is buying flowers.
Cards are being wrapped in ribbon,
children are whispering secrets
about breakfast trays and handmade gifts.

And me?
I sit quietly
on the night before Mother’s Day,
wondering what it feels like
to belong to someone.

Tomorrow,
people will celebrate mothers
with laughter and photographs.
But some of us
carry silence instead.

Some of us know mothers
only as unanswered questions.
As empty spaces at school concerts.
As names never spoken.
As stories we were never told.

Still…
I wonder about you tonight.

Do you think of me
when the world reminds you of motherhood?
Do your eyes pause a little longer
when you see a child my age?
Do you carry guilt like a shadow,
or did life simply pull us apart
before love had a chance to grow?

I used to think
being abandoned meant
I was easy to leave.

But now I think
maybe life breaks people
in places no one else can see.

And though my heart still aches,
I refuse to become bitter.

Because even without you,
I have known kindness.
I have known arms that comforted me,
voices that protected me,
people who chose to stay.

And maybe that is what love truly isβ€”
not always who gave you life,
but who helped you survive it.

So tonight,
on the eve of Mother’s Day,
I light a small candle in my heart
for every child who feels forgotten…
and for every mother
who carries a silent sorrow.

And somehow,
between the grief and the longing,
I still choose hope...

🟒 A CALL THAT CANNOT WAIT: PROTECT EVERY CHILD

A green ribbon is more than a symbol β€” it is a promise. A promise that no child will be left unheard, unseen, or unprotected.

On 03 May 2026, the Department of Social Development, together with its partners, brings this promise to life at the Child Protection Month Launch in eDumbe, KwaZulu-Natal, uniting voices, strengthening communities, and taking a stand against violence affecting children.

From homes to schools, from churches to traditional leadership, this is a collective movement, because protecting children is everyone’s responsibility.
