Matters of the Heart - Breast Cancer Support Group | 9 Junie 2026 โค๏ธ

Soos een deelnemer mooi verwoord het: "You are the creator of your own happiness."

Soos Bob Marley sing in "Three Little Birds": "Don't worry about a thing, 'cause every little thing is gonna be alright."

Our Cancer Support Group meeting held on 13 May was truly uplifting and inspiring. A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful presenters, Annetjie van Zyl, Lynette de Beer and Arnel Huisamen who shared the powerful EI Activator Programme with us.

We were reminded to savour special moments that give us positive emotions and meaningful memories. One beautiful message shared with us was that hope gives us the strength to face difficult circumstances, while also giving us the courage to believe that things can improve and not remain as they are.

The presenters introduced us to the PERMA model for happiness and growth:
๐Ÿ’› Positive emotions
๐Ÿ’› Engagement โ€“ reaching a FLOW state through meaningful activity
๐Ÿ’› Relationships โ€“ spending time with people who energize us and learning to listen intently
๐Ÿ’› Meaning โ€“ living a life of purpose and contribution
๐Ÿ’› Accomplishment โ€“ celebrating growth and achievements

We also learned the AOOA tool to help guide supportive conversations and problem-solving:
โžก๏ธ Agenda โ€“ What is important right now?
โžก๏ธ Obstacles โ€“ What is standing in the way?
โžก๏ธ Options โ€“ What choices or solutions are available?
โžก๏ธ Action โ€“ What is the next step forward?

One of the special moments of the evening was blowing bubbles together. It lifted everyoneโ€™s spirits, a simple but powerful reminder to breathe, smile, and find joy in the moment.

A special thank you to Debbie for the beautiful flower theme and delicious snacks, to Amanda Shelver for the warm and comforting pumpkin soup, and to Elana Botes for organising such a meaningful and special evening.

Thank you to everyone who attended and shared in this special evening of encouragement, connection, growth, and hope.

Breast Cancer Support Evening | April

Our Breast Cancer Support Evening in April was one of those nights that stays with you.

Jan Meyer brought something really special to the room, sharing his thoughts on navigating a cancer diagnosis through the idea of "the box without the handle." It is such an honest way of describing what so many of you face: finding yourself in a situation you did not choose and cannot control, yet somehow still having to carry it. There is such courage in that.

Something else that came up during the evening felt equally important, and that is the role of communication. Cancer changes you. It changes your energy, your capacity, and the way you move through each day. The people who love you may not always understand this, and honestly, it can be just as hard for them to find their footing too.

So if there is one thing we hope you take with you, it is this: talk to the people around you. Tell them how you are feeling. Tell them what you need. Tell them how you would like to be supported right now. Open, honest conversation can make such a difference, both for you and for the ones walking this road beside you.

Thank you to everyone who joined us that evening. It means more than you know to share that kind of space together.

Just Breathe Support Group โ€“ Kindness & Paying It Forward

Our recent meeting focused on the power of kindness, to others and to ourselves. Through a meaningful Kindness Bingo and inspiring insights from Dr. Arnel Huisamen, we were reminded that even the smallest acts can make a big difference.

Kindness can be simple: a kind message, a thank you, a compliment, a helping hand, or simply letting someone know they matter. For cancer patients, these gestures remind them they are seen, supported, and not alone.

Kindness also strengthens the giver; bringing hope, connection, and healing.

โ€œKindness is love in action.โ€

Letโ€™s continue to pay it forward, one small act at a time. ๐Ÿ’›
