This week we celebrated a beautiful morning honouring our incredible volunteers and sponsors. We were especially inspired by one of our Alumni, Bjorn — now a successful business owner — who shared his powerful journey through our Neema Gateway into Reading programme.

As a 13-year-old, Bjorn faithfully attended his weekly lessons. He went from thinking he wasn't capable of ever reading to believing he could read anything. His story reminds us that the journey doesn’t end in the classroom — every word spoken and every lesson taught truly matters.

Bjorn reflected that without the Gateway into Reading programme, he might have been one of the forgotten children. Today, he stands as living proof that our Gateway into Reading programme changes lives.

To every volunteer and sponsor: thank you, we couldn’t do what we do without you. Your dedication & contribution makes stories like Bjorn’s possible and is transforming futures.

We had such a special morning celebrating the incredible work of and their many projects at their annual AGM this week!

We were especially encouraged to hear that their Grade 4 literacy learners achieved an average improvement of 30.4%.

Through our Gateway into Reading programme and the dedication of the passionate iThemba Lethu team, these learners are becoming confident, independent readers.

🌟 Exciting New Project! 🌟
This week we began a partnership with 67 incredible educators from 14 schools in KwaDukuza, equipping them to bring the gift of reading to over 2000 Grade 1 learners through our Gateway into Reading programme. What a privilege to join hands to bring hope through education and play a small part in curbing the tide of illiteracy in our nation! 📚 A huge thanks to for your generosity, kindness and support and to our volunteers who have assisted us to get this off the ground. We couldn't do this without you!

Our Gateway into Reading (GiR) journey in 3 schools in the Kwanyuswa Valley has come to a close. Since May 2022, we’ve trained & equipped 13 teachers and reached nearly 500 learners with GiR —helping them take confident steps toward becoming independent readers. We’re so very grateful to every volunteer and donor who made this possible.

Our teaching team shared a bittersweet morning as we hosted the final Gateway into Reading modular training session with the inspiring teachers of Inhlangano Senior Primary School. Over the past 2.5 years, this journey has been truly special. We are deeply grateful to Nation Changers for partnering with us and sponsoring the learners’ workbooks.

A dedicated teaching team, including volunteers from and our very own Cathy, visited two schools in the Inanda area. They were inspired by the incredible motivation, enthusiasm, and eagerness of the staff to introduce Gateway into Reading to the Grade 1 learners. The learners themselves are just as excited—embracing the joy of learning to read independently in English!
We extend our heartfelt thanks to for partnering with us to sponsor this project and make such a meaningful impact.
