MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE
From the Ecumenical Leadership Council of South Africa on the Passing of His Holiness Pope Francis

21 April 2025

To the leadership and faithful of the Roman Catholic Church,

It is with deep sorrow and solemn respect that we, the Ecumenical Leadership Council of South Africa, extend our heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church on the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, Bishop of Rome and Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, who departed this life on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025.

Pope Francis was a beacon of hope in a fractured world, a humble shepherd of the global flock, and a tireless advocate for the poor, the marginalised, and the environment. His papacy was marked by a courageous commitment to justice, mercy, and reconciliation. His deep compassion and prophetic voice echoed the Gospel’s call to love, peace, and unity.

That his earthly pilgrimage ended on Easter Monday—so near to the resurrection celebration—stands as a sacred and symbolic moment, reminding us that those who die in Christ shall also rise with Him.

We are especially grateful for Pope Francis’ unwavering dedication to Christian unity. His tireless efforts toward ecumenical dialogue inspired many of us across denominational lines to work together as the Body of Christ, “so that they may all be one” (John 17:21).

As we join the global community in mourning this profound loss, we also offer prayers for the College of Cardinals and the faithful of the Roman Catholic Church as they journey through this sacred transition.

May the soul of His Holiness Pope Francis rest in the eternal peace of Christ, and may his witness continue to shine as a light to the nations.

In shared sorrow and enduring hope,

Ecumenical Leadership Council of South Africa
