“Youth need to take the table of the decision-making, to do that we need to care about climate change, critical minerals, because the new reality that Africa is facing, and Mozambique is facing; for example, my country has nine critical minerals, so we need to look out for them and our people so we can take the space of decision-making, and make a difference, while making a change in our communities.”

Alan Herbert Onyango delivered poignant words regarding the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the Just Transition at the & Official day. Read his statement here

Imparting a powerful statement during the & Official day on the inclusion of persons with disabilities to the table regarding the Just Transition and sustainable mining, was Alan Herbert Onyango.

As a person with a disability and Kenyan Disability Justice Advocate, Alan's statement was both sharp and profound, and struck a chord with every participant at the workshop.

“Persons with disabilities are part of the communities where minerals are being mined, and as the minerals are being mined there are persons with disabilities who own the land, and they are being left behind in the conversation because they speak different, look different or work different, and that isn’t fair at all. And if we are going to talk about a Just world and Just Transition, we must make sure they are never left behind and rare at the centre of all these conversations.”

Mining, Energy and Climate Justice Movements at the and Official day

Nzira De-Deus, Executive Director of , Mozambique, spoke for Session 2b of the & Official day on 'Amplifying Women’s Voices in Mining, Energy and Climate Justice Movements'.

She stated:

“One of the main points that we bring as communities and women’s movements, is as women we need to be at the table in terms of negotiation about investments in our communities and also how the resources are being distributed and used in our communities. It’s also important to recognize the burden that women carry within exctractivism. The care work women are submitted to deal with is very high, so it is important to bring policies and services that support women.”

See Admire Mutizwa's call to action during the and Official day for faith-based organizations to stand with mining communities and support the Just Transition

Admire Mutizwa, Head of Programs at Zimbabwe Council of Churches made a striking call to action for faith-based organizations to stand with mining communities and steer their countries towards Just Transition and sustainable mining.

See his summary quote for session 2a of the & Official day below:

“Critical Minerals present a strategic opportunity for African countries to transform their economies. But at the moment we have remained exporters of raw minerals. That has to change. The faith actors need to step up both their moral and ethical responsibilities to promote stewardship in the governance and extraction of critical minerals.”

It’s 2025, and a tailings dam – designed to store waste byproducts – collapses at the Sino-Metals Leach Zambia copper mine. It released toxic waste into the Kafue River system, destroying aquatic life, agricultural crops, and livelihoods, and contaminating the drinking water supply of the nearest city, home to 700,000 people.

Could this have been prevented? Could more mining disasters be prevented?

Dr Claude Kabemba and Monica Mbugua explore this in their latest piece.
