This Women's Month, we celebrate the scientists and researchers driving the development of clinical interventions that empower young women.

Our Deputy Director, Professor Kogie Naidoo is a clinician-scientist and global leader in tuberculosis (TB) and TB-HIV research. Her research focuses on optimizing treatment strategies for TB-HIV co-infected individuals, improving outcomes in drug-resistant TB (DR-TB), and advancing TB prevention through large-scale, multi-country clinical trials.

Last week, some of our CAPRISA Fellows and our Community Outreach Team visited Qosheyiphethe Primary School in Umlazi. They led conversations around bullying, consent, TB and HIV and mental health among others. Learners - who were engagoing and curious - demonstrated an eagerness to learn. Conversations like these matter, meeting young people where they are and helping to break down any false narratives and information around these topics.

Our visiting students from Vin University also joined the outreach exercise.

This Women's Month, we celebrate the scientists and researchers driving the development of clinical interventions that empower young women.

CAPRISAS’s Head of HIV Pathogenesis Dr Sharana Mahomed recently released the results of the Phase II CAPRISA 012C clinical trial, evaluating long-acting broadly neutralising antibodies (bnAbs) for preventing HIV infection in young women, at the International Aids Conference in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

The ongoing high rates of new HIV infections in young women underscores the importance of enhancing HIV prevention and continuing to develop a vaccine and a cure. The CAPRISA 012C trial is a culmination of 22 years of research – while it has not led to a new HIV prevention product, it provides valuable information to guide further bnAb research.

Africa is responding to an active Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — in a global health landscape that has shifted sharply beneath it. Financing is being reconfigured, donor commitments have contracted, and the surveillance, treatment and workforce arrangements Africa has relied on for two decades can no longer be assumed.

Dr Tanuja Gengiah is a senior scientist with over 22 years of experience advancing HIV prevention, treatment, and women’s health research in South Africa. She is Principal Investigator of the Vaginal Microbiome Clinical Trials Unit and Head of Pharmacy at CAPRISA, where she provides strategic leadership for complex clinical trials, investigational product management, and research pharmacy systems.
