What's in a good compost? The pile should be worked up in alternating layers of green nitrogen-rich matter, (grass clippings, lucerne or other legume foliage) and carbon rich material such as straw, bark, shredded paper, dry leaves etc.
Grass clippings should be spread finely so as not to inhibit air movement. Make sure the compost heap is kept damp enough, the process should be complete from 3 to 6months max. Turning the heap speeds up the process. Red wrigglers, beetle grubs of all kind are great compost turners and do away with the need to physically turn the heap. An ammonia smell indicates too much nitrogen and a rotten egg smell indicates an anaerobic condition. Add diamotaceous earth, Voerdoktor, to super charge the compost quality. Autumn is the time for sowing broad beans, soak them for 24hrs to speed up the germination process. This amazing bean is fully frost hardy, nip off the shoot tips with or without flowers for a nutritious addition to salads, or bredie. The only pest that hampers them a bit is the snout beetle that likes to use the bean as a food source for its larvae. If beans are stored, they may have holes in them where the larvae emerges. And still they can be used for sowing, as mostly the bean embryo is unharmed. Even if the bean turns a dark brown colour, it will still germinate. On special today @ R25/packet. It is known to make a very delicious hummus too.
