We believe sustainable development cannot happen without due consideration to culture, tradition and context in which they were developed. What does earning a cash income mean for families in rural Samoa? These families now have a chance to participate in a cash economy. For many, this means being able to send childr

en to school, to pay utility bills and, importantly, to feel better that they have control over their lives instead of waiting for family overseas to send money. What does an income-earning rural sector mean for a country? On a national scale, the people of Samoa are using their skills, experience and time to uplift themselves and their communities. Through their collective industry they are contributing to Samoa's success as a nation.

High Commissioner of Canada visits WIBDI during Measina Festival

His Excellency Keith Smith presented his Letters of Credentials to the Head of State of the Independent State of Samoa, Afioga Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II, during a formal Credentials Ceremony held at the Official Residence in Vailele on 01st September 2026.

During his time in Samoa, the High Commissioner also visited Women In Business Development Incorporated (WIBDI) as part of the Pasifika WE Guardian Project, where WIBDI serves as an implementing partner. He had the opportunity to meet WIBDI members and observe their work, including demonstrations of Samoa’s treasured Measina such as Ie Samoa and Siapo. 🌺✨

This visit, coinciding with the Measina Festival, was a meaningful occasion to showcase WIBDI’s role in empowering communities, supporting women entrepreneurs and farmers, and promoting sustainable development through culture and tradition.

We sincerely acknowledge and appreciate His Excellency’s visit to WIBDI, which strengthens our partnerships and highlights the importance of collaboration in advancing resilience and celebrating Samoa’s heritage. 🙏

We also extend our gratitude to Samoa Tourism Authority for inviting WIBDI to be part of the very first Measina Festival, a celebration of culture, food, and community.

This month, we farewelled our two wonderful Australian volunteers, Market Research Analyst Fiona Howat and Food Scientist Sarah Cutler.
Their contribution to improving and extending our value-added production work has been invaluable. We’re incredibly grateful for the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm they shared during their time with us, and to the Australian Volunteers Program for supporting their assignments at WIBDI.
