DISCOVER MOODY GARDEN
When a Shrub Might Just Become a Tree
Check out the guayacán at Moody Garden.
With its green foliage and beautiful blue-purple flowers, guayacán can grow as a dense, multi stemmed shrub or develop into the form of a small tree. That versatility makes it an interesting choice for Yuma landscapes.
Could this plant work in your yard?
If you like the look of a full flowering shrub, guayacán can provide that. If your landscape would benefit from the form of a small tree instead, its multi-stemmed growth offers another possibility.
Rather than thinking of a plant as having only one shape and one purpose, guayacán gives the gardener options. That can be especially useful when planning a smaller landscape. You may want the fullness of a shrub in one location but need something more open and tree-like in another. A plant that lends itself to either form gives you more flexibility in designing the space. Then there are the flowers. The blue-purple blooms against the green foliage can turn guayacán into a standout in the landscape. It’s the kind of plant that demonstrates that choosing plants suited to our desert environment doesn’t mean giving up color or visual interest. The guayacán growing at Moody Garden is an established plant. It gives you something a photograph in a catalog can’t. You can see its actual form, its branching, its foliage and the space it occupies—and then decide whether you’d like something similar growing at home.
That’s one reason Moody Garden is worth discovering. Throughout the garden are other
established plants that may offer ideas for your own landscape. A plant you’ve never considered before might provide the color you’re looking for, fit a difficult space, attract wildlife or simply introduce you to another possibility for gardening in Yuma.
The next Discover Moody Garden Walk will be held Saturday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to
noon. Come take a closer look at the plants growing in the garden and see whether one of them gives you an idea for your own landscape. And while you’re there, find the guayacán.
You may look at the shrub growing there today and find yourself wondering whether there’s a little tree hiding inside it.
